The difference here though is who should take responsibility for the control of products and content. Its hard to feel sorry for a lot of these vendors because they mixed the core of their business (which is licensing intellectual property) with manufacturing (making cds and dvds) and they clung to this business model for more than a decade after it was technologically obsolete. Now... as far as sites that help you find bit torrents... They are no different than any other sites that host user content or provide search capability. And they can be used to find legal content as well as illegal content. Just like Google, or Yahoo, or any other search engine. Hosting illegal content should be illegal and a serious crime. But providing technologies that help people search for information on the internet that might find both legal and illegal content should absolutely be legal. Instead of trying to attack the nature of the internet, these companies should have been innovating. Instead of hiring armies of lawyers they should have been hiring armies of people to help them evolve their business model. Without them, you would have nothing to steal. I dunno. Most of the greatest music and art and architector in human history was created before there was even such a thing as copyrights and before the government became an agent to protect intellectual property. Im sure record and movie companies would love for you to believe that without them taking the majority of the profits from the work of bands and producers that suddenly there would be no music or art, but I dont believe that for a second. That is not a particularly articulate rationalization for the theft of somebodys property. It does not matter if the vendor is an artist or somebody who has bought the rights from the artist. Instead of trying to attack the nature of the internet, these companies should have been innovating. People steal music and movies and books off the Internet because they can get away with it nearly all the time. They would not dream of shoplifting a CD or DVD or print book because..... well not because they have any moral qualms about stealing from the store, but because they fear the consequences of getting caught.
