PIK Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 (edited) How the libs alway get special treatment from election canada , what a sham. Just imagine if these 4 were conservative, they would be out for blood. What is taking so long, they must figure in time it will be all forgotton about. I guess the 3.1 bil they lost will never be paid back either , or the millions they owe for their scandals. http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/07/30/four-2006-liberal-leadership-candidates-who-still-owe-a-combined-400k-wont-be-taken-to-court-by-elections-canada/ Edited July 31, 2013 by PIK Quote Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.
Bryan Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Elections Canada's double standard is appalling. They go on witch-hunts against Conservatives who are following the letter of the law, yet allow Liberals to openly flaunt their infractions. Quote
scribblet Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 No surprise there. Of course it's the conservatives fault doncha know cos 'the laws are not enforceable' sure... Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
guyser Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 So they dont have to pay back the money pik, or was that just a standard pik hyperbole headline? Quote
scribblet Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 They should pay back the money but E.C. is no longer pursuing the issue... ergo - they are not paying it back. Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
guyser Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 (edited) Should have figured our first two repondants wouldnt read the article linked, but instead suggest faux outrage and mislead those of us who also didnt read it.But then I did. Cuz ya know.... The commissioner has concluded that the Act, as currently drafted, lacks sufficient clarity to support enforcement action in the criminal courts with respect to loans or claims that remain unpaid following the expiry of an extension,” Elections Canada said in a statement. “Therefore, no enforcement action can be taken against the leadership contestants in relation to their unpaid debts.” Should they pay it back? Of course they should. No question, and certainly they are being told that they should by the Chair of EC... Regardless of his ruling, Cote urged the candidates to pay back the owed money out of respect for the spirit of the law. “Despite the difficulties in enforcing the (Canada Elections Act), I believe it is clear that Parliament intended that leadership contestants act diligently to repay their campaign expenses,” said Cote. “I strongly encourage the contestants involved to make every effort to raise funds through individual contributions, repay all outstanding debts and report all transactions to Elections Canada.” The Tories introduced legislation in November 2011 designed to fix problems that chief electoral officer Marc Mayrand has said render the Canada Elections Act incoherent and ineffective. But the proposed law has never been passed — something the Liberals say needs to happen. Whats that Paul Harvey saying again? Edited July 31, 2013 by Guyser2 Quote

guyser Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Well, there is a way, take so much from their pensions. You should Chair the EC then. The actual chair, the one with the intelligence to make the call said...."Therefore, no enforcement action can be taken against the leadership contestants in relation to their unpaid debts.” You go and do it then. Bryan Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Funny how EC has no problem going against their own regulations when it's a Conservative they want to go after. Quote
Topaz Posted August 1, 2013 Report Posted August 1, 2013 Maybe EC is peeved with the Tories for cutting big time and making it harder to do their job. If anything, the Harper government should have increase their budget. Quote
scribblet Posted August 1, 2013 Report Posted August 1, 2013 Actually 'tis a puzzlement because the Elections Act says that if you break financing rules you can be subject to a $1,000 fine or three months imprisonment. Guess E.C. has their own interpretation depending on who’s breaking the law. Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
Bryan Posted August 1, 2013 Report Posted August 1, 2013 Absolutely, they're just making it up as they go along. Quote
