What the hell is going on up there other than greed?

This is a million dollar bonus for parliament FOR WHAT?

Increasing costs for everyone else?

After 4 years of no increases, a 1.6% raise is pretty tame and pretty reasonable...

No its not they make over $150,000 already, and the country is going deeper and deeper in debt why should Canadians have to pay more? They already have a Very good deal for their relatively small amount of work and paper pushing.

That is $150,000 to read something for 5 minutes once a week. that is 260 minutes per year of work, and thats the front bench. The back bench sits and listens to it and claps or boos every now and then, its like being paid 150,000 a year to be studio audience.

That is over $575 per minute of work.

It’s relative……..Many of those members of Parliament, from all parties, put aside careers in which they earned more then that sum……….For some professionals, that’s peanuts……..My wife is a orthodontists and earns roughly (perhaps slightly less) the same as the Prime Minister.

Your wife is getting paid too much too.

Its sad to see people without access to dental care because costs are super inflated to line peoples pockets.

True that is business and people can do that, none the less it is unfortunate. High medical and health costs are a bane of the common person.

None the less, they are, like your wife, getting more than a fair wage, compared to the people on the bottom end of the stick.

Personally they shouldn't even be paid beyond the basic poverty line. They should rule from the bottom not the top, to insure they are the economic class most disadvantaged by their laws. Rule from the top only makes a corrupt and depraved society.

Parliament has been turned into a stage show, and mockery of what is suppose to be a representative system.

It is blind rule otherwise. It is disgusting it is just about lining their cronies pockets. It is just cronyism and clearly unjust and corrupt oppression of the public masses by coercion.

Cry me a river………Between her and her three partners, out of said sum, they also pay the salaries of seven hygienists and three clerical staff/receptionists, to say nothing of rent (Do you have an inclining what medical rental properties cost a month in Vancouver?), insurance and operating costs etc…………Don’t get me wrong, between the two of us, we’re not eating cat food but hardly have a gold house and rocket car either……..
As to getting more then a “fair wage”, you go do it then for less……….And if the MSP of British Columbia covered dental treatment she’d be doing even better through volume, fore unlike medical doctors, the majority of her patients are either paying out of pocket or through a private/company insurance scheme….with that said, a socialized dental plan would never cover cosmetic procedures and that is where the money is comrade.

income before taxes is nonsense to even comment on.

I'm not against the free market I think it is important, personally I just think the government needs to insure essential goods and services by insuring those who are economically disadvantaged are managed and provided for to prevent social abuses through monopolies, supply limitation and price fixing.

But no I think public office should be capped at the poverty line, office costs seperate, and no government paid political staff. People shouldn't get into politics and government for money. I would suggest a bonus based on surpluses after expenses, but even that with a reasonable cap such as the middle income cutoff. There is no reason for politicians to quit their dayjob.

They turned managing the status quo into a make work project and profession when it really doesn't need to be that complex.

Why are they screwing around so much?

Like a few people are effected and suddently everyone needs to have layers of redtape lumped on, and fees and licenses etc.. etc.. its all total bs.

Cosmetics really don't cost much, I suspect medical and dental robots will be available before too long. The stuff castings themselves will become more and more easily manulfactured with now these reprap machines its only a matter of time. Specialists will still be there and regs will probably keep things normative in highly regulated countries but this stuff is on its last legs. With all the hold ups though it will probably be a good 10-20 years before it is in place, 10 years to introduce and 10 years to become standardized. Anything costly will be fair game for AI.

You have this and surgival and medical robots... these skills professions are going to be eroded because their high costs can be replaced by robots for lower cost. It will drive the costs down for the low end people or people who opt for lower cost. ie people without plans or the government covered people will get robotic care.

Dentists will still be there as a backup but technology is replacing stuff. It is stuff that AI can do.

Thisis the age of $500 reprap machines able to make dentures and replacement teeth.

For the free market to work doctors and dentists would need to be free to advertise. I'm not sure if it is law or professional association regulations that prevent them from doing so. Do you know who the more economical dentists are in your area?

The second last dentist I went to charged right out of a dental assoc of BC or whatever they call themselves guidebook. Not saying the last one didn't, he just wasn't so blatant about it. And I don't have any dental coverage.

There was a dentist in town, all I know is that old dental office was closed a couple years ago.. and put up for sale, not sure if he is still around but he appears in a google search. Next one is about 40km away.

I've always had my dental stuff done in southern ontario. Pretty sure just moved into the new "pharmacy building"

The self described "libertarian" now wants federal government to impose in provincial jurisdiction and impose a federal minimum wage?

No, I don't support minimum wages.

I want the federal government to lower their own wages.

I think their salary should be set by public referendum. Personally I think it should be at the poverty line, with legitimate office expenses and travel expenses etc.. separate.

Sorry. Your grapes are so sour it's hard to tell!

Indeed, mentioned the talk about “robot dentists” to the wife……her response: “Someone should go see their robot proctologist, fore it appears they’re developing vocal chords inside their rectum”……..

If they chose to get into politics and leave that high paying job, then they should take whatever salary is thrown at them. They can always quit and go back to the private sector. And when you look at 'Question Period' I fail to see where the professionalism comes into play.

Well that’s the point……..many people are leaving high paying jobs to go into politics.
