Boges Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1305043--mcguinty-wants-locked-door-policy-at-all-elementary-schools-by-next-fall Ontario is beefing up elementary-school security in the wake of the deadly shooting last week in Newtown, Conn., earmarking $10 million for front door locks, entry buzzer systems and security cameras. “It’s an appropriate and a reasonable response,” Premier Dalton McGuinty said Thursday at a Catholic school near Keele St. and Highway 401. The money builds on a 2005 effort that saw 850 of the province’s 4,000 elementary schools get funding for similar measures. The Newtown tragedy has raised questions as to whether Ontario has taken “all reasonable measures,” he added. But a safety expert questioned whether the measures will go far enough, given what happened in Newtown, where 20 pupils were among the gunman’s victims. He's using the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary for another spending project. If a crazy gunman wants to go to an elementary school to shoot little kids, a locked door and a security camera isn't going to stop him. Dude you're not running anymore, please stop making meaningless spending projects. Knowing this guys track record this will cost more than $500 million not 10. Quote

Boges Posted December 21, 2012 Author Report Posted December 21, 2012 You are not aware this is a programme that was started years ago huh? But in response to an unrelated event in the US, Dalton looking for Publicity to make the program mandatory now. It's a very cynical ploy for good PR. Quote

DFCaper Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 In Canada's history, has a gun man ever entered an elementary school??? Wouldn't the money be better spent on real issues, like mental illness? Boges Posted December 21, 2012 Author Report Posted December 21, 2012 In Canada's history, has a gun man ever entered an elementary school??? Wouldn't the money be better spent on real issues, like mental illness? Brampton Centennial in 1975 is the only one I've heard of. The irony, of course, is that the School in Newtown was a Locked Door School. Lanza just shot the window to enter the school. BTW lots of schools have private groups rent the building after hours, how would this effect that? Quote

BTW lots of schools have private groups rent the building after hours, how would this effect that? From what I just read about the 1975 school killings, I doubt this initiative would have done anything to stop that incident. if it would have, this initiative would have been done 35+ years ago. My 6 year olds school has this locked door policy, and it does nothing to make me more comfortable that my kid is safe. The miniscule odd of this happening at the school does. If we spent more time helping people who need help, and move to eliminate the stigmas around mental issues, then I would be even more comfortable. Boges Posted December 21, 2012 Author Report Posted December 21, 2012 Apparently the only schools that had a locked-door policy up until now were ones where the front door wasn't in a sight line of the office. Quote
WWWTT Posted December 22, 2012 Report Posted December 22, 2012 Brampton Centennial in 1975 is the only one I've heard of. I went there for summer school a couple times. But Centennial is a high school and not an elementary school. Also,at the time,Brampton had a population of 10-15 thousand compared to the present half million+.And at the time Brampton was still considered a rural town. WWWTT Brampton population in 1975 was closer to 100k. But the racial make up was much different, whereas in those days in was almost entirely white and now it is almost entirely non white(60% non white). Highest South Asian population in Canada and second highest proportion of blacks for a town in Canada. Quote
