Guest Peeves
There have been those through out history that have changed the geographical face of our globe. Sometimes for a relatively long time. Suleyman the Magnificent 1495 – 1566 Sultan of the Ottoman Empire Alexander. Genghis Khan, Temilun, created one of the largest empires in history, the Mongol Empire But for sheer impact on our world I think the depraved Hitler has changed the history geographically of the world in many ways. If Hitler had been killed in the first WW....! Would Russia (USSR) been the power it was if not for Hitler? Would Stalin have later prevailed over the weakened Europe with communism? With a nuke threat? A Germany divided by a wall? Would Italy have too become an invader and joined if not for Hitler? Would Japan have acted in '41 if not there being a Hitler regime threatening the West? Would China have the degree of communism ? Millions more Jews would be in the diaspora. I doubt that without Hitler there would now be an Israel. The Muslim Middle East would likely differ extensively in borders..countries. Argentina and the West would not be housing Nazis. Cuba might not be a dictatorship. Britain still THE world power. Still 48 states? No Wernher Magnus Maximilian, Freiherr von Braun Rockets..space travel. (was a German-American rocket scientist, aerospace engineer, space architect, and one of the leading figures in the development of rocket technology in Nazi Germany)" No atomic energy? No Volkswagens ? It certainly would look like a different world, but in what ways we will never know. TimG
It certainly would look like a different world, but in what ways we will never know.I would not assume that it would be a better world. Hitler's excesses forever changed attitudes in the west towards race and ethnic differences in the west. Would the west have evolved into the multi-racial and relatively tolerant society that it is today without the memory of Hitler? Guest Peeves
I don't suggest anything but that it would be a different world. Some worse? Some better? Hitler's legacy is the point or crux of my post. I certainly condemn Hitler, The third Reich, Germans of the period as well as Japan, Italy, the USSR and other regimes and individuals.Hitler was though the linchpin of the effect on the world order. TheNewTeddy
Weimar Germany would have been taken over, not by NAZIs, but by Communists, and WW2 would have been between the West and the Commies. But, France was very left at this time, and, Spain may have fallen too. Hence WW2 could have been between the US, UK, Italy, Japan, and Poland VS the Soviets, Germans, French, and Spanish. The second possibility is still a NAZI government in Germany, but a German failure during the war with Poland - which had a bigger army than France in 1939 - and thus the same end result as above with Poland and Germany swapped. Either way, the Cold War would have been between the Democratic West, and the Fascist East. The problem? The commies of this alternate history are stronger than the fascists were in our reality - they may have won the war - and the fascists would have been a far stronger opponent than the communists during the Cold War. In effect; without Hitler, freedom and democracy might not exist as we know it. An interesting fact is that Poland was really on the up and up and only lost so quickly due to the blitz, and the fact that this happened in 1939 and not 1941 (which is when Poland was expecting a war) In fact there is a real chance that had the war begun in 1941 - which is when the Soviets wanted - Poland could have managed to hold on for the entire war. We could have - though less likely - had a WW2 where Poland - Alone - was the major threat in Europe. Guest Manny
Some good points there New Teddy. Those who objectively study history know that the west allowed the Nazis to do their thing for a time, for as long as possible in order to have them fight against the communists. That was a real, identifiable enemy of the third reich. Also there was tremendous resentment in Germany for the poverty they were forced to live in, with the reparation payments demanded by the Versailles treaty. In my opinion Hitler was inevitable. If it had not been Adolph Hitler, it would simply have been someone else.
betsy
I think it wouldn't make much of a difference. If not Hitler, then somebody else. The world would still not have peace. Because of greed, for one thing. Edited December 26, 2012 by betsy
