TheNewTeddy Posted October 27, 2012 Report Posted October 27, 2012 http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2012/10/27/wawa-rain-evacuation-highway-damage.html I've been complaining about the lack of alternate roads for years. I always say "What if something happens" and people tune me out. Now something has happened. Due to this washout you either have to go to the US, or if you are like the majority of Canadians and do not have a passport, need to take an 8 hour detour. Fortunately a detour is possible. Had the washout happened at the Winnipeg-Ontario border, there would quite literally be no way whatsoever to drive from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg if you did not have a passport. It is shameful that our entire country could be cut in half by a storm. Quote Feel free to contact me outside the forums. Add "TheNewTeddy" to Twitter, Facebook, or Hotmail to reach me!

I've seen localities cut off by weather (snow) for days. Shit happens. Not that I don't empathize, but reality bites. Quote
TheNewTeddy Posted October 27, 2012 Author Report Posted October 27, 2012 You are okay with only one (1) road connecting the entire country together? This isn't some kind of tip of a tip situation, this is the middle of the entire country. There is a similar situation east of Thunder Bay. Fixing these two problem spots would ensure that this sort of thing is nearly impossible. Quote Feel free to contact me outside the forums. Signals.Cpl Posted October 27, 2012 Report Posted October 27, 2012 How many roads would you add in order to prevent a repeat of this situation? And how would adding more roads in the same general area prevent all of them from failing at the same time? Quote Hope for the Best, Prepare for the Worst
Bonam Posted October 27, 2012 Report Posted October 27, 2012 Who's paying for the backup highway system that's only needed in case of freak storms every couple years? Quote
Smallc Posted October 27, 2012 Report Posted October 27, 2012 There's like, what? Two short sections in Ontario like that. Quote
bleeding heart Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 It's true. Even here in NB, not exactly famous for our riches and our good roads, there are already alternate routes, except in a very few cases. Quote “There is a limit to how much we can constantly say no to the political masters in Washington. All we had was Afghanistan to wave. On every other file we were offside. Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver." --Bill Graham, Former Canadian Foreign Minister, 2007
TheNewTeddy Posted October 29, 2012 Author Report Posted October 29, 2012 There are alternatives to the wawa washout. There are no alternatives to some routes in Northwest Ontario. Quote Feel free to contact me outside the forums. Add "TheNewTeddy" to Twitter, Facebook, or Hotmail to reach me!
Smallc Posted October 29, 2012 Report Posted October 29, 2012 There are alternatives to the wawa washout. There are no alternatives to some routes in Northwest Ontario. Like I said, 3 short stretches. One east of Thunder Bay, one west of Thunder Bay, and one west of Kenora. Quote
login Posted October 29, 2012 Report Posted October 29, 2012 (edited) Roads are expensive, get an ultralight. Nothing like the wide open northern roadway. http://www.beliteair...com/how-to-buy/ I bet they have electric and derigible models kicking around too... http://www.uflyit.com/instock.htm These things go faster than cars too... what are you waiting for.. http://www.copanatio...ngaAircraft.pdf Look at that sexy pinup on page 4. Get an offroad vehcile. I do tend to agree with you but I think the only new roads should be coming out of forest fire prevention programs, etc.. no paving etc... just dirt... people should buy better vehicles that can handle off road conditions.
