Charges against RNC protesters dismissed

NEW YORK -- Charges against 227 anti-war protesters who were arrested during the Republican National Convention were dismissed by a Manhattan Criminal Court judge Wednesday at the request of the district attorney's office.

Judge Katherine Fried dropped disorderly conduct and parading without a permit charges after being told that the march, sponsored by the War Resisters League, was nonviolent and resulted in neither personal nor property damage.

The ACLUs take

"During the Republican National Convention, the NYPD used mass-arrest tactics to arrest hundreds of demonstrators and bystanders who were doing nothing illegal," said Dunn. "The district attorney’s action today should send a strong signal to the NYPD that it must stop using these tactics."

If the ACLU says it's so, then it must be so.

The ACLU is absolutely in the right in this and the case must not be closed so easily. Mass "preventive arrest is one tactic of the Administration to stifle dissent. It is being done without probable cause to prevent and deter protest.

Where did democracy go?
