A blatant and discriminatory move ... and I wonder what Harper's targeted ethnic communities that voted for him think about this denial of service to non-Christian inmates.

Chaplain issue a failure of civil rights

A generous reading of this situation could look at the possibility that Toews's intention might simply have been to cut down the number of chaplains in the federal prison system (although it remains unclear from the ministry's statements if budget issues or streamlining rationale were involved in this decision). The fact that firing all the part-time chaplains meant firing all but one of the non-Christian chaplains was simply an oversight, or an unfortunate coincidence.

From the available evidence, however, it really seems as though Toews doesn't see the value in non-Christian religions. To quote the CBC report that broke the news: "Toews said he wasn't convinced part-time chaplains from other religions were an appropriate use of taxpayer money." It's a little unclear from this statement what he objects to - the fact that the chaplains are part-time, or non-Christian - but in case we needed help, Toews's office released an email clarifying his position:

"The minister strongly supports the freedom of religion for all Canadians, including prisoners," the email equivocates. "However, the government ... is not in the business of picking and choosing which religions will be given preferential status through government funding."

...

The email that was written on Toews's behalf argues that it isn't the government's business to "pick and choose" which religions get preferential treatment, all the while defending his choice to give preferential treatment to a specific religion.

...

But the bottom line is that if a Christian prisoner has the right to receive government-funded counselling from a religious figure of his or her preference, then Muslims and Sikhs and Wiccans have the same right. And the minute we start mumbling things like "well, percentagewise, there are more Christians, so ..." we're exercising our privilege in ways that erase other peoples' needs and rights.

People make mistakes Derek. I don't see any point in hitting people while they're down. It's just cyber bullying. The kind that cost Amanda Todd her life. We need to stamp this kind of bullying out. It kills people.
