jacee Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 The Conservative government’s Russian doll budget legislation is starting to generate opposition from within its own ranks. David Wilks, the rookie MP for Kootney- Columbia, may be so back-bench he’s in danger of falling off, yet he already knows long careers in politics are not founded on further aggravating angry local voters. At a meeting in Revelstoke, he reportedly told people protesting against the omnibus budget bill that he would vote against C-38, if 12 other Conservatives voted alongside him Unfortunately, before you could say“career-limiting move” he was compelled to “clarify” his comments by saying he now supports the bill. http://www.nationalpost.com/m/wp/full-comment/blog.html?b=fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/05/23/john-ivison-criticism-by-conservative-mp-shows-depth-of-unease-over-omnibus-budget-bill Of course ... but obviously the idea is out there ... 13 Tories could turn this ship around! http://www.nationalpost.com/m/wp/full-comment/blog.html?b=news.nationalpost.com/2012/05/23/candid-tory-mp-comments-caught-on-camera-suggest-internal-backbench-dissent-over-conservative-omnibus-budget Quote
cybercoma Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 Sorry. I should clarify. By "never going to happen," I mean there isn't a chance in hell this will happen. Quote
jacee Posted May 24, 2012 Author Report Posted May 24, 2012 Sorry. I should clarify. By "never going to happen," I mean there isn't a chance in hell this will happen. It will if enough constituents convince their MP's ! I think there's a large number of people, especially in Ontario, who held their nose and voted for Harper as the only conservative option, who would support MP's in withdrawing from the party. Obviously, they don't vote against Harper's wishes and expect to stay in the party, but they can withdraw and sit as Independents or form their own (eg) Progressive Conservative party. Quote

Fletch 27 Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 Sure looks like Rasemary Barton and the Sulomon guy are adding alot of thier own bias or context.. I wouldnt even call that a "flip flop"! Both Soloman and Barton have had a hate-on for Steve Harper and his democratically aopointed Majority since they cut funding to the CBC and axed the show with thier pal Mark Kelly.. But back to your point.. I cant even call this a "flip flop"... http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/ID=2238486044 Try again... Or shall we just consider him a flip flopper... Quote

eyeball Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 I bet the guy still has whiplash. The idea's still out there though ... I wonder how Wilks' constituents feel after having put their faces out there too? True blue Harper Conservatives notwithstanding, it should be a little humiliating to Canadians everywhere to have our elected dictatorship rubbed in our noses as flagrantly as it's been with this omnibus budget. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
Fletch 27 Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 You call it a dictatorship, me and the majority that back him call it a Democratically apointed Majority leader and we LIKE it! We like a guy that can keep his word and grow the economy.. There is no "majority" backing Harper. He has an artificial majority of seats in parliament that's a function of targeted campaigning, revealing a gaping weakness in our outdated 'first past the post' method of election. How could Harper possibly have the support of the "majority" of Canadians when only selectively chosen ones are even allowed to go and hear him speak? Even a majority elected (not "appointed") leader can be opposed by the people. It's not a free ticket. It is, in fact and in law, an oppportunity for a party to lead a government that can sustain the confidence of the people ... an opportunity and nothing more. And if a party attains that majority fraudulently, it's pretty much certain that they won't retain the confidence of the people, or Parliament. Edited May 25, 2012 by jacee Quote

jacee Posted May 25, 2012 Author Report Posted May 25, 2012 Really? Ahhhh yes, blame it on democracy and a broken system when YOUR guys dont get elected... There are many forms of democracy. Most other countries have recognized the limitations of FPTP and implemented some form of proportionate representation by now. Im sure it was ok when Cretien was in?? Chretien? My 'guys'? Surely you jest! Do the HarperCons have no higher aspirations than to be as bad as the scandal-ridden Liberals? We got rid of them, didn't we! Quote

WWWTT Posted May 26, 2012 Report Posted May 26, 2012 I have to agree with Cybercoma on this one. But stories like this just show that the conservatives are going to have a real hard time in a few years come election time! What really surprises me is that no conservative MPs have jumped ship yet? WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! That reminds me, never ask Greg to be a business partner! NEVER!
