Mayor Rob Ford, who scrapped the $60 vehicle registration tax shortly after taking office, has vowed there won’t be any new taxes during his watch, which runs to Dec. 1, 2014. His brother, Councillor Doug Ford, has been more receptive to seeking new ways to fund transit expansion. Another revenue-generating idea would be to encourage well-heeled citizens to donate to city initiatives, Pasternak said. And the city could do more to entice corporations to sponsor city programs and purchase naming rights. “We need to give philanthropists better opportunity to contribute,” Pasternak said. “There has to be an aggressive courting of philanthropists and corporate Toronto.” Lots of questions about how this is going to work. 1) and 1a) Video or Toll Booth? Will installing Video Toll sensors cost more than it's worth? 2) What's going to stop someone to get off the highway and use Lakeshore or Yonge? 3) Why isn't Toronto raising property taxes to raise this money? 4) Will this be a congestion charge for Rush hour or a 24/7 thing so if people want to come in during the weekend they'd be dinged too? 5) You guys know this'll work both ways right? Nothing stopping Vaughan and Mississauga for dinging anyone trying to leave the city. Oh and the International Airport is in Mississauga. 6) How much will the toll be? I don't go to Toronto much I just don't see how it's workable and I don't see how Toronto will make a lot of money from this. Edited April 25, 2012 by Boges Quote

GostHacked Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 Watch the crooks running the 407 jack up their rates because of this... Someone has to pay for the monitoring of toll roads that taxpayers paid for!! You pay and pay and pay and now a toll, and pay for the monitoring and pay for the higher tolls to pay for repair, and pay more taxes because the corporation needs a bailout from the government, because they are not making enough money on the road .... which is again.... taxpayer money ... Does anyone understand how the general public is getting completely shafted here? Quote
Boges Posted April 26, 2012 Author Report Posted April 26, 2012 Does anyone understand how the general public is getting completely shafted here? No one is being forced to use it. It's a fantastic highway if you value your time over the money you spend on it. Quote

He believed in toll roads. I wonder which company is lobbying to run them... maybe its one of those parking meter companies in Vancouver , who seem to have TO wrapped up.. or maybe a Spanish company wants Toronto Toll Road monies... dre Posted April 26, 2012 Report Posted April 26, 2012 “Non-residents would contribute to help support the city’s prosperity.” Non residents already DO contribute to the cities prosperity. Visitors to this country spend money into the local economy. They eat food, shop, stay in hotels etc. Thank god most of the nations infrastructure was built before Generation Useless (thats us). Boges Posted April 26, 2012 Author Report Posted April 26, 2012 (edited) User Fees is what you get with right wingers.... Enjoy... the Ford Era. Ford isn't the one advocating for toll roads in Toronto. The better way to ding people coming into the city would be a parking surtax because everyone that comes into the city has to park for a period of time. But that also dings people that lives within the city, but if you live inside Toronto and still drive around, you can probably afford the hike. Edited April 26, 2012 by Boges Quote

User Fees is what you get with right wingers.... Actually Bob Rae's Ontario NDP government brought in the toll idea for the 407.(an absolutely brilliant idea too!) Thanks do David Peterson and Bill Davis governments uncontrolled deficit and debts, the Ontario NDP had to be very creative in their solutions to solve Ontarios problems(thank God) The toll was to be lifted after the debt incurred from constructing was paid off(roughly 25 yrs from opening date, but this was revised to 15 because of the tolls unexpected increased tally. So if the 407 was not sold off it would now be free as any other 400 series freeway(thanks Harris/Eves) WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year!
