Government departments have been ordered to keep details of spending restraint out of their May reports to Parliament – suggesting Canadians could still be in the dark about the cuts more than two months after the federal budget is released.

The chief financial officers of all federal departments and agencies received a memo Tuesday from a senior official at Treasury Board, informing them plans have changed as to how the public will be told about spending cuts.

The federal budget – which must be released before the end of March – is expected to confirm the government’s plans to cut at least $4-billion a year in program spending. However further details of those cuts were originally going to come in May when every department publishes a “Report on Plans and Priorities.”
