Who said it was men's fault? Has the editors of Rolling Stone always been men? I'm not sure. Perhaps there have been female editors. Who's responsible for the covers? Is it a separate team that decides and approves them?

I think you're mistakenly thinking this is a men vs women issue when that's not what's being suggested at all. It's a women are being depicted much more frequently in a hypersexualized way, as non-sexualized depictions decline. Neither the article I posted, nor I made any argument whatsoever that men are doing this to women.

Sigh. Cybercoma presents an articulate, interesting, and meaningful thread for discussion. And it gets highjacked by the knuckle draggers.

No kidding. Even any serious points the detractors might (I stress might) have to offer are lost beneath their own generated barrage of tantrums and mockery.

“There is a limit to how much we can constantly say no to the political masters in Washington. All we had was Afghanistan to wave. On every other file we were offside. Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver."

10 Reasons the Rest of the World Thnks the US is Nuts by Soraya Chemaly

  1. Making women carry still-born fetuses to full term because cows and pigs do
  2. Consigning women to death to save a fetus
  3. Criminalizing pregnancy and miscarriages and arresting, imprisoning and charging women
  4. Forcing women to undergo involuntary vaginal penetration (otherwise called rape)
  5. Disabling women or sacrificing their lives
  6. Giving zygotes "personhood" rights while systematically stripping women of their fundamental rights
  7. Inhibiting, humiliating and punishing women for their choices to have an abortion for any reason
  8. Allowing employers to delve into women's private lives and only pay for insurance when they agree, for religious reasons, with how she choses to use birth control
  9. Sacrificing women's overall health
  10. Depriving women of their ability to earn a living and support themselves and their families

Violence against women in Canada:

On average, every six days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. In 2009, 67 women were murdered by a current or former spouse or boyfriend.

On any given day in Canada, more than 3,000 women (along with their 2,500 children) are living in an emergency shelter to escape domestic violence.

Each year, over 40,000 arrests result from domestic violence—that’s about 12% of all violent crime in Canada.3 Since only 22% of all incidents are reported to the police, the real number is much higher.

As of 2010, there were 582 known cases of missing or murdered Aboriginal women in Canada.4 Both Amnesty International and the United Nations have called upon the Canadian government to take action on this issue, without success.

In just one year in Canada, 427,000 women over the age of 15 reported they had been sexually assaulted.7 Since only about 10% of all sexual assaults are reported to the police, the actual number is much higher.

Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16.9

About 80% of sex trafficking victims in Canada are women and girls.

61% of all Canadians say they personally know at least one woman who has been sexually or physically assaulted.

More than one in ten Canadian women say they have been stalked by someone in a way that made them fear for their life.

The cost of violence against women in Canada for health care, criminal justice, social services, and lost wages and productivity has been calculated at $4.2 billion per year.

These statistics seem suspect to me. If 427,000 is just 10%, that means 4-5 million women per year in Canada get sexually assaulted per year. That's 1/3 of the female population every year. Applying a bit of simple math, that means that the chance for any given woman to go a 10 year time span without getting raped is only about 2% on average.

Obviously, these are way off. Unless one uses a stupid definition of sexual assault, like someone making you uncomfortable with a corny pickup line, or a prolonged glance of someone checking you out.

Since this one statistic is obviously way off, that puts substantial doubt on the others as well in my mind.

That's fine by me, I'm just playing this thread's silly ass game. Obviously, Canada is really a paradise for women compared to the USA! ;)

Your math doesn't work. It's still 1/3 after 10 years.
