but I’d wager revamping it as a “Canadian PBS” with the same calibre of programming, would capitalise on a niche market

The problem with a Canadian PBS is that outside of major metropolitan areas, there wouldn't likely be the available viewership/donations to make a regional station affordable. So regions covered by the CBC over the air would be SOL, especially many rural, remote and northern areas. I would imagine that the CBC is a fairly large customer of one telecommunications provider or another.

Since the CBC cacked jPod, I have no time for much of their programming, except for HNIC, news and some documentaries. However, here is one of the best benefits of the CBC: they can operate smaller stations in smaller markets. CHEX is a Peterborough based station that covers both Peterborough and Oshawa and areas in between. The major GTA stations carry almost no news or local programming about these smaller cities. CHEX is a CBC affiliate, which means that they are a privately owned broadcaster (CORUS owns CHEX) that pays affiliation fees to the CBC to pick up bulk feeds for certain programs. To me, this is a more effective form of ownership where such ownership can exist. All other areas could be covered by CBC owned and operated stations and back in the day, there used to be quite a few under this scheme.

One of the best aspects of CBC programming is that they can produce more quality material without being bound to the commercial demands of any particular advertising sector. History and Discovery seem to be suffering from this phenomenon, if it actually exists. They have had to dumb down their programming to attract the number of viewers to afford the advertisers that pay for their broadcasting costs.

When I mentioned PBS/TVO as models, it was in terms of their programming choices, not their funding model. I'd still like to see a government-funded public broadcaster. If anything, I'd be in favour of seeing less commercials.

strombo treats everyone the same no matter which political backround you are

Yeah, I haven't seen a strong political bias in his interviewing or even his choice of interview subjects at all, really, especially considering that he mostly interviews entertainers. When he had P. J. O'Rourke on his show, for example, he certainly treated him as well as any other guest and never even argued with him at all.

I’m not suggesting changing how the CBC is distributed, but what it’s end product is.

I agree……..when I see a Ken Burns documentary on PBS, or Frontline, Nova and Nature, I can’t help but think, why isn’t CBC doing this……..instead we get Little Mosque, Dragon’s Den and Don Cherry…….

*I’ve nothing against Don Cherry, and he’d still be Don Cherry on TSN or Sportsnet.

One episode of Nova is worth all of the cbc's programming, save for maybe the news when I don't find it biased or preachy.

I agree......I enjoy Peter Mansbridge, and feel he is the most trusted Canadian news anchor.....He runs circles around anything CTV, Sun or Global have.....

Have you ever met Don Cherry?

He is putting on an act when he's on coaches corner.

He is an entertainer,a show.

Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! That reminds me, never ask Greg to be a business partner! NEVER!

I bet if they fired Strombo or Rick Mercer there wouldn't be. :D

And what do think will happen to their ratings once CBC is privatized?
