And why is that, they are cute , what goofball activist wants to kiss a rhino. Time for people to wkae up and tell these celebs to F off, and we do not want to hear from them any more, go make your millions on making another shitty movie and STFU, or even better go after the real culprits not just easy marks.

If we killed all the seals there would be nothing around to eat all the young cod which would result in a glut of more-than-6-inch-codfish and the fish in the stores might be able to have "Canadian Product" on the label and would also cause layoffs in eastern Canada in the Pogy offices because the fisher(persons) would be back at work on the boats. Our governments would never allow an increased seal kill because these layoffs would result in labour strife in CUPW, resulting in a total breakdown of the civil service (that which is broken already can be MORE broken???) resulting in more back to work legislation which would cause WWWTT to fill yet more forum pages with blather about dictatorial governing by Harper, disgusting all of us even more. So--- let's keep the cap on killing those sweet, smiling snow seal pups that require at least 10 LBS each of undersized cod per day.

You know, it is this sort of cause-and-effect economic explanation that make daily visits to MLW totally worth my time.

Thanks Tilter! :)

Why are you getting Harper involved?

Why are you getting me involved for that matter?

I believe that PIK has a beef about the Western Black Rhino(Oh by the way I did see a black rhino at the Guangzhoe zoo last year, not sure if it was a western though) not getting the attention it deserves.

However I disagree with you about killing all the seals in eastern Canada.Completly destroying an animal species can't be good for the ecosystem.

Being opposed to a cruel seal hunt is not trumped by lepers in India... or the extinction of black rhinos.... or bad drinking water in native communitis... or starving children in Africa... or [insert worthy cause here]... or [insert worthy cause here]... or [insert worthy cause here]... or [insert worthy cause here]...

p.s. the seals were not the reason for the collapse of the cod fishery.... people were.

DFO's own website holds the cod fishery up as an example of over-fishing.

Despite having one of the most regulated fisheries in the world, Canada has not been immune to the effects of overfishing. The collapse of the Atlantic Canadian cod fishery in the 1990s is one of the most commonly cited examples in the world of overfishing and its economic, social and cultural implications.

Actually, I have.

Poaching is a huge problem and a lot of attention and effort and money have been directed towards trying to overcome/lessen the problem - and PETA most definitely has been involved in the cause; the biggest danger to Rhinos is poachers, and poaching is illegal - while the seal hunt is not.

And I saw a sleeping owl at the Ancaster Fair in the fall. It wasn't endangered (except for the fumes from the Nanacoke coal fired power plant, the auto fumes from bypassing cars, kids with slingshots, the odd Native hunter with a crossbow and the odd drunk driver rolling in the ditch)

However I disagree with you about killing all the seals in eastern Canada.Completly destroying an animal species can't be good for the ecosystem

Sarcasm ---- defined as "Witty language used to convey insults or scorn"

Killing off any species (with the possible exception of the human species) is bound to be bad for ecology)

They're quite aware that it is not, hence the protest against it.

I am still undecided on seal hunting. I don't think I would support an all out ban. That said, there is a difference between protesting what your government does/supports as opposed to what another government does. So I don't think comparing black rhino's to seals is a fair comparison.

When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always. Gandhi

My understanding is that it is a problem for the cod to make a come back. 6 million seals @5-7 cod each per day, now of course I could be wrong but when you do the math ,that is alot of cod.

And yet we see American news videos about the southern US "sportsmen" EACH taking hundreds of ducks & geese, pelicans & swans in Texas along the Migration flyway. Where are the Kennedys & the ex-Beatles protesting when these birds are shot? Maybe safely bitching about a Canadian cutting down a tree which will be used to repair a house in Tennessee or Oklahoma wrecked by a tornado?

I don't know if that's true or not, but giving you the benefit of the doubt, a huge difference between the scenario you have posted above and the seal hunt is that the "sportsmen" you describe above are not killing the baby ducks, geese, pelicans, and swans before they've learned to fly, as they helplessly sit in their nests, unable to escape, shortly after birth.

There are plenty of white rhinos left, maybe PETA could just paint some of those.

Nobody would know the difference except maybe the rhinos at sexy time.

And I saw a sleeping owl at the Ancaster Fair in the fall.

are you quite certain it was asleep? Maybe it was nailed to its perch.

The government should do something.

Yeah, contact Arnold Schwarzenegger, he should be able to help.
