Boges Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 (edited) http://www.metronews.ca/toronto/local/article/1026722--students-protest-school-ball-ban Students at Earl Beatty Public School revolted against a schoolyard ball ban yesterday, storming the playground fence at lunch hour to state their case.“We want our balls back!” they chanted as supervisors shooed them away and reporters gathered on the other side of the fence. The days of kicking a ball around at recess ended Monday after students took home a letter advising no child could bring a soccer ball, football, volleyball or even tennis ball to the junior and senior school in the area of Coxwell and Danforth Avenues. The letter stated there have been a “few serious incidents” in which staff and students have been hit, or come close to being struck, by flying balls. One parent suffered a concussion after she was hit by a soccer ball. Now, only Nerf or sponge balls can be brought. “Next they'll say you can't run because kids fall or you can't wear (shoe) laces because kids trip,” said Konstantina Alexiou, 13, a Grade 8 student. WTF type of world do we live in where kids can't play sports at recess. I remember playing Tackle Football at Recess in Grade 5. Not even tennis balls? Good on these kids for kicking up a ruckus. Guest American Woman Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 Makes one wonder what the kids are supposed to do during recess. It's no wonder there's an obesity problem among children. Quote
jacee Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 (edited) The news video of the kids hanging over the fence chanting was great! A whole new generation of protesters! I do wonder, though, about a woman picking up her kid being hit by a hardball ... is the baseball diamond that close to the school entrance? Seems there's another problem there. I look at the asphalt 'playgrounds' at city schools and think that our acres of grass and field were much nicer back when ... We had at least 4 ball diamonds and that's what we did at recess/lunch all the time. However, I believe we only played softball ... might be wrong, maybe the older boys played hardball ... not sure ... but it would seem to me softball would be a better alternative than 'nerfball'. Boges Posted November 17, 2011 Author Report Posted November 17, 2011 That's the weird thing about this....they never mention baseballs.... Doesn't mention Lacrosse balls and Hockey Pucks either. Baseballs are kinda dangerous. Getting hit in the head with those would suck a fair bit if you didn't have a helmet. In the schooyard we always played baseball with a tennis ball. Quote
Shwa Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 ‘Let them play ball,’ parents say of school’s ball ban School officials would not talk to the Star but school trustee Sheila Cary-Meagher said the most serious injury at the school to date involved a parent, who was hit in the head by a soccer ball and suffered a concussion. Meanwhile, in other news, TFC sign a striker from the playgrounds of Earl Beatty Public School. Quote

Shwa Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 WTF type of world do we live in where kids can't play sports at recess. We're progressive now, haven't you heard? Yes because one incident at a single school in Toronto shows what sort of "world" "we" live in. Quote
GostHacked Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 Makes one wonder what the kids are supposed to do during recess. It's no wonder there's an obesity problem among children. Not just exercise, but what they eat has a lot to do with it as well. I'd say about 70% of what we buy in the grocery store is simply bad for us and we should overall avoid it. Or at the least drastically cut down on the crap food. I mean we have ads on TV that shows us that we should be sitting in front of the TV eating whatever junk food they advertise, being lethargic watching whatever mind numbing TV shows. Change your diet and the rest will become easier. You can't get healthy by exercising while eating all this garbage. I've changed what I have eaten over the last year, I have not lost much weight, but I feel a lot better than before. But damn the things I did as a kid would scare most parents these days. 'Billy get out of that tree you are going to hurt yourself'. Quote
