I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but the flaws in the first study apparently directly resulted in the second one. I think part of the problem is that the first study considered far to many things, and that the results were often contradictory and war sometimes comparing things that healthcare systems couldn't in fact fix.

The second study, IIRC, considered only the ability of a system to prevent death, and Canada's high ranking, considering the logistics of this country, is actually very impressive.

lifespan is the ultimate benchmark I'm not worried if some other country places ahead of us because surveys are influenced by things like cost/results and access...cost to me is irrelevant if it extends my life...access in a tiny country smaller than calgary is misleading as everyone in that country has very quick access to medical care, if you live in remote settlement in northern manitoba you won't have that...

Sure...but if internet comments sections are any indiction, new media isn't helping many people.....

I'm heartened somewhat by this discussion. It seems to me that I'm better able to elucidate my ideas on how new media can/should/will affect our democratic institutions than I have been in the past. Or maybe the changes we're seeing now are making the connection more obvious. Maybe time for a new blog column on this topic, and thread too.
