Argus Posted November 2, 2011 Report Posted November 2, 2011 The important question that should be asked is this one: why do the records need to be destroyed? Cuz they contain private information which is no longer of any use... Argus Posted November 2, 2011 Report Posted November 2, 2011 Here's an idea, ANY province that wants the registry should be able to get it and if they DON'T get it, then the Feds have to refund the money to the province so they can do one of their own. Since it was paid by the taxpayers, the list belongs to the taxpayers of that province. The information in the registry is private. I don't believe the feds CAN give it to any outside body just like that. Nor should they anyway. The Canadians whose names are on that registry objected to the whole idea. The records were badly designed, and often misused by police. Good riddance. WWWTT Posted November 2, 2011 Report Posted November 2, 2011 You think the Tories are going to tie up their own bill in court? What? Where did you get that from? I know for a fact that if someone made a costly legal challenge(and unlikely) against the conservatives attempting to scrap the bill. The conservatives would battle any challenge regardless of the cost to taxpayers! WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! That reminds me, never ask Greg to be a business partner! NEVER!
Shwa Posted November 2, 2011 Report Posted November 2, 2011 Whether people here can "imagine" value in it or not, the point is that government records shouldn't be destroyed. It's now historical records that ought to be preserved, regardless of any functional purpose they may or may not have. It's like saying, what's the point of keeping land petitions from Black Loyalist Refugees in Nova Scotia. We're no longer British North America and they serve no purpose any more. The point is that it's a record of our heritage now and there's no purpose in destroying the historical record. The point is that once the registry is done, the information it contains no longer qualifies as a "record" for archival purposes. The best I can see is limited historical demographical data and that is with the personal information redacted. However, not all information the government has is retained as records. Such an accumulation of data would be almost impossible to manage nto to mention being a big waste of time and resources. Quote

WWWTT Mea culpa, I thought you suggested the government with their deep pockets, could afford taking the planned destruction of the registry to court to stop...... Quote
PIK Posted November 4, 2011 Report Posted November 4, 2011 I think it would also be illegal for the goverment to hand out that very private info, we do have privacy laws here. Quote Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.
