Shwa Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 Interesting story from the Star: Blair wins: Ford poised to accept police budget hike I guess some people just aren't worth the fight for Mayor Ford, but look on the bight side: by backing down from the big bad cop, Mayor Ford and his Nation will inevitably claim that they made Toronto safer by not enforcing the 10% 'gravy cut' to the police. Mayor Ford should be applauded for this, he helped catch criminals next year. It's heroic really, saving Toronto the Good. So much for the showdown.Police Chief Bill Blair was told by Mayor Rob Ford and the police board to make a 10 per cent budget cut. When he returned with a 1.5 per cent increase, saying the requested reduction of $93 million would necessitate layoffs and endanger the public, Ford’s hand-picked representative on the board threatened his job. Less than three weeks later, Blair has proposed an increase of 0.6 per cent — and the man who uttered the threat, Councillor Michael Thompson, said the board will approve the proposal Thursday even though it is only $8 million smaller than the proposed increase the board firmly rejected on Oct. 5. “It’s not what we were hoping for in terms of achieving a 10 per cent reduction this year, but the board has given the chief the option of achieving it over two years. He did come up with a reduction, and there’s an opportunity to reduce that further,” Thompson said. He acknowledged: “We were looking for more. We were. But it just wasn’t found.” So they could only find a .6% increase this year, but lo! and behold! they are some how going to find 9.4% decrease next year because, as we all know, when crime rates go down, so does the cost of the police. Then again, if there is another increase in the police budget next year, it was because of all that unreported crime. Quote

Has Ford actually found any 'waste' anywhere yet? I didn't hear the outcomes of the marathon public hearings. He's just another private sector businessman who assumes everybody else is ripping off his tax money, but has no clue what public employees do. Perhaps he's learning. No talk of the cops selling off their million$ in equipment for suppressing public protests. Quote
Black Dog Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 I wonder how much we'll hear from the usual suspects about greedy public sector unions on this? Quote
jacee Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 I wonder how much we'll hear from the usual suspects about greedy public sector unions on this? The 'usual suspects' voted for Ford! Police are the darlings of the right wing. One of Ford's campaign promises was 100 new officers. Quote
cybercoma Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 I didn't see the cops making the public safer during G20. In fact, I saw the Toronto Police as a threat to public safety. Quote

treehugger Posted October 25, 2011 Report Posted October 25, 2011 Why, do tell treehugger. What "facts" should be looked up in this case? Chief Blair has found 43.1 million $ in their budget to save and they are still working on it. Funny how you left wings see everything in a negative mode. you only understand you are going to get and it's free etc. Quote

And millions more in administrative costs, uniforms, guns. Plus, the police union won't get any larger. In fact, what I have done is nothing short of heroic. Quote

But are you worried about the murder rate around you, apparently I have heard some people say it is skyrocketing, and the unreported murders is thru the roof! Quote

But are you worried about the murder rate around you, apparently I have heard some people say it is skyrocketing, and the unreported murders is thru the roof! I haven't talked to a few neighbours recently, so there is one source of unreported crime. The ones I don't know and have never talked to are likely more sources of unreported cimes. But I don't trust them anyways since, if they murder someone, will they report it? No way! So unreported murders must be skyrocketing! And that basement light in the house across the street, what was it doing on all night one day last week. No doubt some Dexter-like murdering was going on. I know this because it was unreported. So it goes unreported..unlike Rob.... What's with the cranky old man righties and their lonely, guilt-ridden mind masturbation in the back closet? One of the reasons they are considered old, bitter whack-jobs. Quote
