The National Capital Commission which looks after the buildings in Ottawa, wanted to start the renos on the home of the PMs but Harper and family don't want it done and they are happy the way things are. The wiring is over 50 years old and AG had said that its urgent that reno starts because of the old wiring and the updates that are needed and that was back in 2008. What is Harper waiting for a fire, which can happen. The cost back in 2008 was 10 million and now the price will go up as time goesd past. It was noted by a Lib. that Harper has set as side 10 Million for the 100th year for the Calgary Stampede and the Canadian Football League, two of the biggest events in western Canada. I think, since Harper has had the PMO, the stampede had gotten money every year and last year, the Tories said events are only allowed for 3 years and events were denied. If I'm wrong on that, I certainly apologize, but I don't think I am. So, should the reno go ahead? http://www.hilltimes.com/dailyupdate/view/four_years_after_ag_says_renovating_24_sussex_urgent_pm_harper_has_no_plans_to_temporarily_move_out_06-28-2011

Harper can renovate his home when he wants to.

I dunno the relevance of or even wtf you are saying with this:

"I think, since Harper has had the PMO, the stampede had gotten money every year and last year, the Tories said events are only allowed for 3 years and events were denied. If I'm wrong on that, I certainly apologize, but I don't think I am."

Some kind of crazy lefty babble I assume.

Yeah, topaz's Harper derangement sickness is really getting out of hand. Criticizing Harper for spending in some threads and now for NOT spending. Give your head a shake, man.

There is a difference, this cost is placed at 10 million and going up and with the old wiring, if it catches fire someone may be hurt or killed and the building destroyed and THAT will cost even more to build. Yes, I question Harper's spending as well you should too, for ANY PM. I'm sure you will when a NDP or Lib are in the PMO and well you should.

It's not his home.

I figure that if Harper can manage to win 3 elections in a row, manage to get rid of the Grits & manage to run a country he can manage to decide when to spend a few million on renos.

Well, who was in 24 Sussex 10 years ago when the wiring was 40 years old and could have started a fire back then? And it would have been MUCH cheaper to get it done back in the day. Why wait 10 years on 40 year old wiring? WTF was Chretien spending money on???

There is old wiring and there is OLD wiring! It's not so much the age that makes it dangerous as the era it was installed.

50 year old wiring is essentially no different than wiring that is 5 years old. The materials were designed to last a LONG time and the wiring standards are the same. 50 years ago we had 3-prong grounded wiring, the same as today. There's no reason why wiring installed 50 years ago shouldn't be perfectly safe today.

Wiring pre-1960 lacked the extra ground prong but was still good and lasting quality.

As we get back into the 40's and older we can see problems. In those days we used a technique called "knob and tube" which actually is safer than modern wiring! The problem is not with the wires but with the wood and materials within the walls, which can become tinder dry. If a wire was to be disturbed off a mount you could have a short and cause a fire.

So stop harping about the 50 year old wiring in Harper's residence! You obviously have never done any wiring yourself and are just once again dragging up any old thing to disparage Harper. I don't think he's that great either but for Pete's sake Topaz, stay within reason, won't you? You make yourself sound like a kook and people will be less likely to listen to you at all.

How the Hell can it possibly cost ten million to do some lousy renovations? You could build a whole damn subdivision for that much money.

The answer is very simple, splashed all over this thread and only three words long: National Capital Commission.

They effectively have no budget limit and generally no clue as to fiscal reality.

The government should do something.
