Seems to me that all the CPC has to do to snag more votes and seats is discipline those making dumb comments and relax on the notion of private medicine.

What, if anything, can the NDP do to become more relevant?

1- get Jack in the House. Done.

2 -address strategic voting issue.

The NDP's share of the popular vote went from 9% in last election to 16% last night, the only Pan Canadian party to have increased their share of the popular vote.

3 -more party discipline. When Jack talked about Clarity Act during the campaign, other NDP MPs openingly criticized him.

And they should have. Jack and the liberals should merge. Then they would be relevant. The extreme left could be moderated by the brokerage nature of the larger party. Hay Martin siad they have the same values. Did Martin tell a fib?

LOL. To agree or disagree,to tell the truth or lie,to be left or right, the liberals are all to every Canadian Citizen.

The Ndp are more forthright, they will not have power unless they lower their standards to that of the FLIP FLOP

LIBERALS.

The last thing I want to see happen to Canada, is the country run by the NDP.

My taxes are high enough as it is!!

But in response to your question, I really don't think that the NDP will ever get the support it needs to become a governing party.

We need to trash the idea of a governing party. The NDp is relevant to their supporters and a lot of left-leaning Liberals. They are also relevant to the right...note the vehemence of those who oppose them.

We need a new system, one where all Canadians have a voice. The best idea I've seen to date is proportional representation. If anybody has a better, more workable, idea then I'd like to hear about it.

so if it is the conservatives it's gag order, if it is the NDP it's party discipline?

Reverend, why is the BC Provincial New Democratic Party not in favor of proportional representation? For that mater, are any other Provincial NDPers?

Because when a party gets that taste of power they tend to back away from the idea. I've been going after them here for the same reason, and I voted for them.

BC is an interesting case though...they actually have a citizens' forum looking into the matter. I don't know who initiated it, and I don't really care. It's the right thing to do.

So why bother giving Jack that taste? ;)

As far as I know, the only party in favor of proportional representation in BC, are the Greens.

The NDP had ten years to change to a form of proportional representation within BC.......none soup

I am not entirely sure whether this form of representation is the best way to go. Why not have a combination of proportional and regional representation? They are not mutually exclusive and it would not be the way it is done now. Give the neglected regions more MP's but have them proportionately represented.

How about trying this, an equal and proportionally represented senate with each province getting lets say 10 senators which are chosen based on a PR system. Then give the senate some real power and the the west will certaintly not feel like they never get a say and smaller parties will also get some seats.

I thought we were all democrats who support the idea that one vote equals one vote.

I guess some of us are more democratic than others. ;)

The Greens got 4.3% of the vote - don't the people who voted for them deserve 13 seats in the House of Commons?

Actually there are a number of different ways to look at proportional rep.

Most naysayers point to Italy and Israel, which are messy, but there are tons of European countries that have working models, and New Zealand has an interesting model as well.

There's no reason PR couldn't incorporate regional rep as well.

Of course, everyone else would have do agree on it, because Quebec would HATE that. ;)

That is the tyranny of the majority over the minority. Hence, we put in safeguards to protect the minority. This is tantamount to giving the minority more weight in an election. So one person does not equal one vote.

In a regional country such as Canada with different minorities and a stark English speaking/French speaking split, PR is not obvious at all.

I think our regionalism makes proportional representation more, not less, obvious. The Reform/Alliance/Conservatives are almost as regionalised as the BQ. Proportional representation would encourage them to break out of that.

As for whether PR gives more or less democracy, MS has already posted the vote percentage vs. seats won elsewhere on the form. It is clear that the Conservatives and the Liberals are over-represented in the House of Commons and the smaller parties are under-represented.
