Molly Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 I didn't have the opportunity where I lived. I'm doing my best to learn it on my own off and on, but I do work 10 hours a day 5 days a week right now (well, some weeks), so it's difficult. What makes you think that others do have the opportunity in any meaningful way? My French teacher was percieved as excellent- and I do think very well of the man both personally and as a teacher even now- but he had a heavy Welsh accent and an Elmer Fudd speech impediment. I can just imagine what my(our) earnest attempts to reproduce his pronunciations would sound like to others! So, would you say I had the oppportunity, or that I did not? He was there because he was the best instructor available. Can't you just imagine whole immersion schools devoted to Diefenbaker French? Good faith willingness, and even the honest attempt do not make up for the real world unavailability. Quote "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" — L. Frank Baum "For Conservatives, ministerial responsibility seems to be a temporary and constantly shifting phenomenon," -- Goodale
wyly Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 When without a real argument claim your opponents are racist eh? Last I checked spekaing a languaged didn't dictate your race. last time you checked did you also discover there is no such thing as race...get back to me when your head stops spinning with that revelation... Good faith willingness, and even the honest attempt do not make up for the real world unavailability. you don't know if your any good so you're too embarrassed to try...it's an unfounded fear for a number of reasons...people don't care if you speak their language with an accent it's impossible not to, just like english depending on where you live you'll have an accent even within the same country...the mere fact that you try impresses them they won't judge you for an accent...my daughter was afraid to speak french when in Paris for the same reason, when the french discovered she spoke it they were very encouraging praising her efforts... wyly Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 I didn't say government work is useless. I'm glad that somebody is there to do is. Just like I'm glad that somebody is there to pick up the garbage each week. It's great that somebody does it. It's just not something I'd aspire to. you were quite clear you thought it was pathetic there's no avoiding that anymore...most people wouldn't consider being in the military, an ambassador or PM pathetic...and what did you aspire to kimmy? some meaningless job in a hole in the wall town in the middle of nowhere, wow your aspirations and achievements are so much higher I think it's funny that the two of you who are lecturing people for not learning French ... didn't actually bother to learn French either.most people become wiser when they get older and see their past errors...you haven't hit that point as yet, or may never...Ironically... I actually did learn French. I spent 6 hours a week in grade 7 and grade 8 in "French as a Second Language" classes. What an epic waste of time. I spent hundreds of hours trying to learn a language that I've almost never used outside of school. The only time I've actually used French outside of school was when I was living in Ottawa... I could understand French well enough that I could kind of make out the story of the "Bleu Nuit" soft-porn movies on TQS-Hull late on Friday nights. Cultural enrichment!whoopie I did the same, you effectively learned nothing...I wish I had those prime learning hours of free instruction back so that I could use them to learn something that would have been worthwhile. I should have taken music instead of French. I wish I had that decision to make over again. The best learning years of my life and I wasted hundreds of hours on French that I could have spent on guitar. It was a big mistake. I'm poorer culturally because of it, and it's more difficult to learn now. excuses, your blaming french for your failings in music...you never would have done it you would've quit music just as you did with french...by the time wyly Jr completes high school he'll will have 8yrs of french lessons behind him as well as 8yrs of guitar outside of school which you could also have done but you squandered your time...your failures are your own fault... cybercoma Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 There's a tremendous French cultural and intellectual history. The language is well worth knowing. Same goes for German. Not that the government should be making policies to force people to learn them. Quote
kimmy Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 you were quite clear you thought it was pathetic there's no avoiding that anymore...most people wouldn't consider being in the military, an ambassador or PM pathetic... I just wouldn't do any of those jobs myself. If I found myself in politics, I'd have to kick my own ass. If I found myself answering phones and forwarding emails and shuffling papers in a cubicle, I'd probably cut my wrists. I'd join the military if my country needed me to... and I doubt they turn away unilingual folks. and what did you aspire to kimmy? some meaningless job in a hole in the wall town in the middle of nowhere, wow your aspirations and achievements are so much higher Hole in the wall? I live in a place where people from all over Canada come to vacation in the summer, a place where people from all over the world come to ski in winter. People work their whole lives in other parts of Canada so that they can afford to live places like this. I get to spend every day of my life in a resort. I wouldn't swap addresses with anybody on this forum. What have I aspired to? I've got a fun, well-paying job that I love, doing active work outdoors in fresh air. And I guess it's my great loss that, if I had just stayed with French, I could have a job in a cube-farm in a grey government building in Hull, working for the French-Canadian equivalent of this guy instead. ...man, did I ever miss out. excuses, your blaming french for your failings in music...you never would have done it you would've quit music just as you did with french... My failings in music? I've only been at it for a few months. I haven't failed at anything yet. I just wish I'd taken advantage of the opportunity I had in junior high school instead of wasting my time learning a language I never used. Let's talk about your failings for a moment. You sit here saying "woe is me, if only I had learned French while I was young." Well, why'd you quit? You said the bigots tricked you in to quitting. Let's be honest: if it had mattered to you, you would have kept at it. If you actually used it for anything other than homework, you'd have kept at it. If you actually cared about it, you wouldn't have quit. When you decide to be honest with yourself, you'll realize that the reason you quit French wasn't because of anybody except yourself. And the reason you didn't care enough to keep at it, most likely, is that you felt that learning a language that nobody around you can speak was pointless. by the time wyly Jr completes high school he'll will have 8yrs of french lessons behind him as well as 8yrs of guitar outside of school which you could also have done but you squandered your time...your failures are your own fault... Good luck to him. I hope there's a nice cubicle in Hull waiting for him when he graduates! -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
wyly Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Not that the government should be making policies to force people to learn them. that same logic could be applied to all subjects taught in schools...we send kids to schools to educate them, we do that by equipping them with the tools they need to succeed as adults...to ensure optimum success in canada requires both official languages and internationally a third as well... You could make an argument for that, but one could also argue that a person doesn't need to be multilingual to be successful either. I think it's a choice someone has to make for his/herself. Quote

I think it's a choice someone has to make for his/herself. kimmy thinks her working a menial job is successful because she works outdoors and not in a cubicle so you could argue it's a personal perspective...but to optimize one's potential speaking two three languages increases one's opportunities of success in any endeavor...we're not talking persons we're talking about kids, we don't give kids choices...give kids choices and most would pick craft's, gym time and recess over math, kids have no idea what tools they need for the adult world...what kids want to do when they become adults rarely ever happens so we give them a broad base education so they're able to have as many career options as possible...when I was a kid grade 8 was the minimum level of education acceptable, then it moved to high school, then a Uni degree, now the reality is now at least two degrees(if not a masters degree) and a language, yes you can get a job with less but the getting the job you want, being successful with a pension is difficult,...with globalization there is much more competition the best educated get the most opportunities and the best jobs... what we're seeing in this discussion is uninformed and biased adults and making decisions for other peoples kids..."you can't make me learn french, so no one is going to tell my kid to learn french" ...what they're doing is perpetuating their ignorance on another generation because they can't see the bigger picture themselves...
