Shwa Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Interesting article in the Star. Snuffing free speech is starting younger and younger these days. Whew! For a minute there these brats were actually talking back. First, this is what the kid said that got him the vacation: This year, the soccer season was one that easily surpassed the expectations of everyone involved with the team. Admittedly, these expectations were extremely low, due to the three years of abject failure that we have been subjected to, through no fault of our own. We now have it in instilled into us that “soccer” (at Northern) is synonymous with the word “unnecessary.” We had this point made clearly to us during the season, when our last two home games, one of which was against NT, were moved to Forest Hill to allow the football team more field time. Nevertheless, we had a team this year, due to the tenacity and perseverance of several players, who took it upon themselves to do the phys. Ed. department’s job and find a coach. Here's the story: School suspends teen who criticized athletics program Good gawd! Do we only hire the childless in our education system?? Quote
Topaz Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Myself, I can understand both sides of the issue. I think most schools, the football team is put in the #1 position, unless there's a hockey team. Also, being 17 is a rough time for teens and he felt cheated by the school, which made him feel he wasn't good enough because he was on the socceer team and not the football team, which was having special treatment. As far as the schools requirments of being respectful, follow the rules and take responsibilty for your actions, have student ever visited the House of Commons while QP was going on? Quote
Michael Hardner Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 It's not too surprising, given the lack of engagement and consultation that is endemic to our public institutions. They are so slow to change, that they are still organized like the top-down organizations of the 1950s. It's "decide and defend" in action. Evening Star Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Myself, I can understand both sides of the issue. What do you understand about the school's side of it?? If the article is giving us the whole story, this seems like a completely indefensible action on the school's part. Quote
bjre Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 This is the Canadian education of freedom speech. And this is the exactly the meaning of freedom speech of the western world. Quote "The more laws, the less freedom" -- bjre "There are so many laws that nearly everybody breaks some, even when you just stay at home do nothing, the only question left is how thugs can use laws to attack you" -- bjre "If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny." -- Thomas Jefferson

Blah blah blah evil western panty wearing world blah blah blah. Did you ever watch a documentary called the "Dying Rooms"? Perhaps you should, in fact I recomend that anyone who hasn't seen it watch it. Its availlable at least in part on the internet. Once you do, feel free to come on here and tell us evil westerners just how evil we are in comparison to what it shows. It might just give you a different view of CAS, at least compared to the subject shown. Quote I yam what I yam - Popeye

Wild Bill Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 Interesting article in the Star. Snuffing free speech is starting younger and younger these days. Whew! For a minute there these brats were actually talking back. This is the inevitable result of giving too much power to academics! Quote "A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul." -- George Bernard Shaw "There is no point in being difficult when, with a little extra effort, you can be completely impossible."
Evening Star Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 High school teachers, coaches, and administrators are not academics. Quote
Michael Hardner Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 I didn't realize that the student made the speech to the whole school at assembly. But still, these seems like a harsh punishment. Oh well. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
Evening Star Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 Why shouldn't he make that speech at an assembly? Students at my school sometimes made comparable speeches when running for head boy or head girl and were not punished for it. Quote
