Originally in ancient Greek governance...those that assembled to discuss policial matters were part of a club...appointed and or elected...These insiders had the right to speak publicly and to voice their opinions and ideas freely...NOW if a bright and smart person came up with a great idea and he was NOT part of the club....and he interjected his view during the assembly of club members he was shut down...The chairman would yell "do not listen to him..he is an idiot" This was an exclusionary way of doing buisness...They did not mean that the idiot was STUPID...it just meant he was not a formal member and did not have the privledge to speak..so remember- when you are called an idiot it does not mean you are stupid.

But somehow language de-evolved and the term idiot was equated with the lack of intelligence..

I really don't look upon sexuality in terms of prowess..it's not like having the biggest fastest car and saying - look at me! Sex is a good thing and a great pleasure and joy..and it can be what they in modernist talk call an "addiction" - in the old days you would not be frowned upon for being a big breeder but you would be celebrated.

People love bashing artifical woman...commonly called gays...wonder if it is the over crowding of the field called the rat race that brings about such an implosion and destruction of human health? The big picture is that we live in a free society, where individual liberties save in the most extreme cases, trump any attempt justify their limitations for the "good" of society (which, you'll find, has much more often than alleged social engineering, been the cause celebre of the authoritarian). What two people of the age of consent choose to do together privately is none of our business, providing that what they do is indeed consensual. What's more, another key notion of a liberal society is equality before the law, and if two people of opposite sex get certain legal and financial rights, that means that two people of the same sex living in a similar arrangement cannot justifiably be denied the same rights and responsibilities.

I'm not interested in your febrile fantasies about Hitler and Freud. No one has taken Freud seriously for well over half a century, and Hitler, well, that's just the bogeyman that people like you drop into any conversation for no better reason than to cast a long shadow.

You don't like homosexuals, that's clear. That's your right, whatever the underlying pathology. But thus far you haven't said anything that convinces me that they represent any kind of Fifth Column or destructive element in society. Many famous and great people throughout history have been homosexuals, so there's nothing in homosexuality itself that suggests any risk to society, so I think your homophobia, whatever the root cause, is simply irrational, and as much as the human animal tends to irrationality, I do not think public policy should be based on our baser instincts.

I have no problem with homosexuals. I find what they do icky, but to imagine that I would object to them enjoying the same legal rights as I do simply because I'm squeamish is outrageous. They are first and foremost human beings, and any discussion must start and end there.

An argument against same-sex marriage, from a sector of the political Right, has been that such changes constitute "social engineering."

What they fail to recognize is that not allowing same-sex marriage is certainly "social engineering." That the bigotry has been sanctified by time and tradition does not change this salient fact.
