maplesyrup Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Harper linked to notorious Yankee, uh, crumpler David Broder, the legendary political columnist for the Washington Post, described the Helms spot as follows:In 1990, locked in a tight race with an African American Democrat, former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt, Helms aired a final-week TV ad that showed a pair of white hands crumpling a rejection letter, while an announcer said, ‘You needed that job and you were the best qualified. But they had to give it to a minority because of a racial quota.’ ” - April 29, 2001 To see the spot, go here: http://www.pbs.org/30secondcandidate/timel...990b.html#movie On his website, McLaughlin takes credit for winning the Helms race, saying he “focused the race upon the issues of honesty and quotas to win, after media polls conducted the week before incorrectly forecast Helms losing.” McLaughlin is also known for putting together anti-abortion messages. He produced an advertisement for Steve Forbes’ 2000 Presidential campaign, which labeled the United States’ foremost pro-choice advocacy organization, NARAL Pro-Choice America, “extremist.” The spot also highlighted Forbes’ support for putting restrictions on abortions and called for an end to using taxpayer funds for the procedure. It’s no surprise, then, that Stephen Harper is listed on McLaughlin’s website as a client. Humm...... Quote An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. August1991 Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 What you fail to note, MS, is that this is a memo put out by the Liberals. The memo's logic implies that Martin's campaign staff are either beyond desperate or just plain dumb. I'm increasingly going with the latter. Quote
maplesyrup Posted June 9, 2004 Author Report Posted June 9, 2004 I tried earlier to find it on the Liberal website to no avail. Alliance Fanatic Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 But then again that add about the white male being rejected a job is true, in many American states racial qouta's have been taken to extremes. In Baltimore for every white officer hired, a minority officer has to be hired, even if he scored 75% and the white applicant scored 95%. NARAL is also considered an extremist organization, whats wrong with saying that pro abortionists are extremist. Don't you call anybody that supports the traditional definition of marriage, and pro-life supporters extremist. Argus Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 American style smear campaign? I haven't seen any smearing coming from the Conservatives in this campaign. I've seen all the muck and mud being flung against them from the Liberals - and now the NDP. Quote "A liberal is someone who claims to be open to all points of view — and then is surprised and offended to find there are other points of view.” William F Buckley
August1991 Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 I haven't seen any smearing coming from the Conservatives in this campaign. In the Liberal mind, any reference to spondorship funds and so on would be considered a smear. The word "smear" like the words "extremist" ("mainstream", if you prefer) and "terrorist" ("freedom fighter", if you prefer) have elastic meanings. I suppose we can all agree that the sky is blue on sunny days. Quote
DAC Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 I suppose we can all agree that the sky is blue on sunny days. Well, are you ever an optimist! Quote
