Argus Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 It hasn't really come up much in the election yet, but I would think the Tories would love to get this issue onto the radar. We keep getting these warning stories about how Al Quaeda wants to do something here, how we're number four on their list of targets. But the government pays no attention and does nothing. My impression is that since 911 the Liberals have done precisely *nothing* to improve Canada's miserable state of security. We still have minimum wage security guards doing airport scanning. Our coast guard and naval vessels - such as they are - remain tied up at dock most of the time for lack of personnel and fuel, leaving our coasts open to anyone who wants to get in. Since the Liberals eliminated the Ports Police our ports are pretty much open to smuggling of people, weapons, drugs or what have you. Our military is in a pathetic state. The RCMP is so underfunded they have had to pull people away from patrolling along the border for lack of money. CSIS is too underfunded to maintain any kind of comprehensive surveillance on people we know support terrorist groups. You can still tear up your identify papers, walk off a plane in Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal, call yourself a refugee, and be on the streets a few hours later, to do whatever you want. Nor do we properly know where refugees who never showed up for their hearings (months later) ever wound up. My impression of Paul Martin is of a man who couldn't care less about terrorism. I still remember him ignoring the advice of CSIS, the CIA and Foreign Affairs in order to attend a fund raising dinner for a group all of them labelled as terrorists. The next day in the House he and Chretien were mocking and snickering about it, accusing those who demanded why he went of being racist. The Liberals are extremely vulnerable on security issues. Quote "A liberal is someone who claims to be open to all points of view — and then is surprised and offended to find there are other points of view.” William F Buckley
caesar Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Mr Harper would probably make us a more of a target for terrorists by joining and approving of the reckless and vile aggressive acts of the present American government. Bush does not believe that he and his country need abide by international laws and the Geneva conventions. Quote

Root cause nonsense. That was the logic used by all Central European governments to Hitler. If we manage to hide, he'll ignore us. Quote

I guess those "reckless and vile aggressive acts of the present American government" have been working quite well lately. Us or them really wouldn't you think? And I agree with Argus, the current government has been doing quite close to sweet fany adams about terrorism and security. I don't know what I fear most, a terror attack in Canada, or a terror attack in the States that is proven to have been launched from Canada.......
