Solar storms

Recommended Posts

The Sun is going into a 11 year storm cycle and Earth can experience the solar storms that come with this cycle. Satellites, electrical grids, along with disruption in communications and navigation systems, by altering the Earth's Ionosphere and the astronauts could have their lives threaten at the Space Station. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/yahoocanada/100610/canada/coming_solar_storms_could_be20_times_worse_than_katrina

Comparing solar storms to Katrina is the stupidest thing i've ever heard...this week.

The article is sensationalistic and just aims to randomly scare laymen. When a solar storm is incoming (for which we always have ample warning due to an array of equipment dedicated to that purpose), you just turn off the satellites so they don't get damaged. Surface infrastructure is almost never damaged by solar storms. The ISS is also adequately shielded, it was designed to exist and function whichever part of its cycle the Sun is in.

The Sun has entered and left periods of increased activity countless times, including several times within the timeframe in which we've had technology that could potentially be affected. No Russian astronauts were killed by sunstorms on Mir, no cities were left without power due to sun storms, etc.

Perhaps if there is some freak superstorm the ISS would have to be evacuated so that the astronauts don't exceed their allowed radiation doses. The whole 20 times the economic damage of Katrina is also dishonest..., for one because that damage has never been properly quantified, and secondly because the ISS by itself very likely costs more than all the damage caused by Katrina.
