Topaz Posted April 24, 2010 Report Posted April 24, 2010 Some polls show William Shatner as a favourite but its up to the PM. One thing Shatner has going for him, besides sense of humour is he's Jewish. This would have Harper knowing he has a friend for Israel and what more could Harper ask for? http://www.vancouversun.com/entertainment/William+Shatner+takes+commanding+lead+push/2942653/story.html Quote

Though I don't know as he'd want the job. CANADIEN Posted April 24, 2010 Report Posted April 24, 2010 I thought his was good..... Shatner.. Well known, no obvious political connection, bilingual, may bring a lighter touch to the position. And is 79 years old. Next. Quote

Smallc Posted April 24, 2010 Report Posted April 24, 2010 Oh, and just for clarification, there is no hypenation in the Canadian spelling of Governor General. Quote

Muddy Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 Shatner has a lot of class. To bad it`s all third! MacKenzie and Hillier are to honest and blunt . General Herb Pitts and his wife Marianne would be perfect. Intelligent! Honest as the day is long. A real 1st. class couple who would bring honour to the position with a military past and although retired are still involved with our young soldiers. I spent this week end at a military reunion and was honoured to sit and eat breakfast with this elderly , intelligent, warm and hospitable couple from the west. I have been to other events involving this class General and he would be perfect for the job. Quote

Muddy Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 How about Lloyd Robertson? Too old perhaps? We have had two journalists in a row. Time for a man and a military background. Would it not be nice to have a GG who earned their hardware on their chest? Quote
Smallc Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 Would it not be nice to have a GG who earned their hardware on their chest? They've earned it simply by being appointed to the position. Quote
Muddy Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 They've earned it simply by being appointed to the position. Yes ,but life time soldiers earn their medals by duty to our nation, sometimes in harms way and some awful places that we send them too. Also Senior Officers are steeped in history regarding the Monarchy. Quote
Smallc Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 Yes, I get that, but to say that a solider would have actually earned the medals implies that the current GG hasn't. As part of her office, she is the commissioner of the medals, and so they are hers to wear. I'm just saying that the office is important no matter who is occupying it...and the current occupant is good at her job. Quote

They don't get campaign or other service medals unless they were earned in combat. Quote

I don't know if you heard it, but the piece talking about the Governor General on the House this weekend was terrible. The whole piece was about the face that the Governor General in the last couple terms has been asked to go abroad. They were wondering, since she is the representative of the Queen in Canada, what she is outside of Canada (which I would think is obvious...she's then the representative of Canada's head of state). It talked about how the office could get more legitimacy (by being elected) implying that it doesn't have any. Then, someone went on to say that they hadn't heard Great Britain get upset about the Governor General being asked to go abroad by the PM. Well, I should hope not, since it has nothing to do with them. I don't know if the speaker (and I don't remember who it was....but it was someone who should know better if I recall) was referring to simply the Queen or her office, but I doubt it, since people usually refer to Buckingham Palace in that case and not Great Britain.... Frustrating....like most things CBC has been doing lately. That's why I've generally stopped watching and listening. Quote

I have, though, read and heard similarly stupid things said in the media. And I wonder how it gets said at all. If you're not an expert on the subject - or even remotely knowledgeable about it - why are you speaking publicly about it? If you are supposedly an expert on the subject, who exactly was it that deemed you to be one? Of course, everyone's entitled to their opinion. But, if you're going to make a living off of speaking yours to an audience, is it so hard to do a little research? I mean, the governor general has been travelling abroad since our first governor general! (The Viscount Monk visited President Andrew Johnson in the late 1860s.) The British have had zero to do with the governor general since at least 1931, if not before. And since when was direct election the only way to impart legitimacy? Do we all have to vote on our laws every, what?... week, to ensure they remain legitimate? Those facts can be found through any basic internet search and the logic is pretty basic. Why can't the majority of media commentators be arsed to do what used to be expected of them: research and express a sound opinion? Quote
