maplesyrup Posted June 6, 2004 Author Report Posted June 6, 2004 Harper must come clean on partitioning Quebec Conservative leader Stephen Harper has to stop hiding and tell Quebecers clearly where he stands on such questions as the partition of Quebec in the event of a vote for sovereignty, says the co-chairperson of the 1995 referendum campaign."He has put the possibility on the table," said federal Social Development Minister Liza Frulla. "He has to clarify it." Frulla's comments came after Montrealers awoke to a front-page headline yesterday, saying Harper would support the partition of Quebec in the event of a Yes vote. "Canada has a moral and legal obligation toward the residents of Quebec who want to remain Canadian," Harper wrote in 1995. "Some people want to go as far as the partition of Quebec by poll, but for practical reasons, we will stick to municipal territories." While Harper's comments had originally been made two months after the 1995 referendum on sovereignty, an unnamed member of Harper's campaign entourage confirmed to the newspaper he still held the same views. In an interview with The Gazette, Harper refused to confirm or deny he still held the same views, saying the adoption of the Clarity Act ensures the situation will never arise because a clear majority of Quebecers will never vote for sovereignty on the basis of a clear question. The publication of Harper's past comments on partition comes only days after Harper delivered a speech in Montreal designed to court the soft nationalist vote in Quebec. Yesterday's article drags Harper into a potential political minefield. In the riptides of Quebec politics, few questions are more explosive than what would happen to federalist areas of Quebec should Quebecers vote in favour of sovereignty. The question of dividing Quebec is one many seasoned Quebec politicians scrupulously avoid. Only hours after Harper's comments about partition were published in La Presse, Raymond Villeneuve, formerly a Front de Liberation du Quebec terrorist, issued a statement on behalf of the Mouvement de Liberation Nationale du Quebec, saying Harper was advocating civil war.
