I realize this story comes from an extreme left-wing site, but bear with me. :)

The Obama administration once again is troubled and "frustrated" by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who reportedly is threatening to align with the Taliban while accusing the United States of meddling in his country's affairs.

"The remarks are troubling and the substance of the remarks are simply not true," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday.

President Obama's top spokesman suggested the trouble with Karzai could endanger U.S. military operations in the country. He was reacting to comments Karzai made Saturday during a private meeting with Afghan lawmakers. They came after Karzai and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tried to patch things up Friday following a similar outburst earlier in the week in which he accused Western governments of sabotaging his election.

"I said it was troubling on Friday. Obviously, it didn't get any better," Gibbs said.

The latest spat between the two administrations came as American-led forces in Kabul admitted to killing three Afghan women during a February raid -- after NATO initially claimed the three women were found "tied up, gagged and killed" when the Special Operations team got there. The International Security Assistance Force now says the team "accidentally killed" the three women while firing on two men who appeared "hostile," though were later determined not to be insurgents. The men were also killed -- NATO now says it appears the men were merely trying to protect their families.

"The men were not the targets of the operation, but were armed and displayed hostile intent. All regrettable," Rear Adm. Greg Smith, the top military spokesman in Kabul, told Fox News. "That said, there is absolutely no evidence that the forces covered anything up."

A NATO statement said it was initially concluded that the women were killed because of a misunderstanding of "Islamic burial customs," an apparent reference to the condition in which the women were found.

But The New York Times reported Monday that officials have offered conflicting accounts of whether there was evidence of "tampering" at the scene. One official said there were signs of bullets removed from the walls nearby. Another report from The Times of London said Afghan investigators found the team dug bullets out of the bodies of the women.

which if true will either harden any of the deceased families pro-Taliban stance or create more Taliban who previously were not...

his government may be corrupt but Karzai has a legitimate complaint, if he is seen as to be pushed around by the Western Alliance he will be seen as nothing more than a puppet by his people...

The story of the killings and UN denial has been posted on several legitimate news websites:

NYT: U.S. admits role in killing of Afghan women

"NATO initially denied involvement in the deaths and in any cover-up."

Despite McCrystals attempts to minimize civilian casualties, these horrific events continue to occur. What else would you expect in a war?

Not surprised that Karzai would make such statements. If true, they do explain his recent outbursts. Clearly he has a bug up his ass about something.

Yes, they're expected, certainly. They're also profoundly tragic and horrible.

Karzai to lawmakers: ‘I might join the Taliban’

Afghan leader made threat twice at closed-door meeting

MSNBC - Afghan President Hamid Karzai threatened over the weekend to quit the political process and join the Taliban if he continued to come under outside pressure to reform, several members of parliament said Monday.

Lawmakers dismissed the latest comment as hyperbole, but it will add to the impression the president — who relies on tens of thousands of U.S. and NATO forces to fight the insurgency and prop up his government — is growing increasingly erratic and unable to exert authority without attacking his foreign backers.

The lawmakers said they felt Karzai was pandering to hard-line or pro-Taliban members of parliament and had no real intention of joining the insurgency.

What??? Pro-Taliban members of parliament? They were democratically elected!

See what happens when you give fools the power to vote...

This Karzai needs to be ousted by the US. Either that or Obama needs to go over there and give him a stern talking to. And a hug

We had our chance after Karzai and his supporters clearly cheated to win the last election. I have no idea why we keep backing this crook. At the very least someone needs to remind Karzai that the only reason he hasn't been roasted over a spit by the Taliban is because NATO is keeping his government propped up.

Because it's what we do. It's how we do things over and over in that region.

It's who we are.

I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical,
a liberal, oh fanatical criminal
