Guest American Woman Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Washington I've been to 3 times and it's ok. The museums are good but were too Americentric for me I hear ya, and I just hate it when that happens! Like when I went to China, and it was good but everything was too Chinese for me. What's up with that?? The capital of America "too Americentric." Quote

The capital of America "too Americentric." No, my comment is that a lot of museums carry a lot of stuff from around the world, which, when going to a museum, I'm sorry, isn't too big of an expectation. The Capital, the White House, the monuments aren't what I was talking about, more about the smithsonian's. There's cool stuff in there but even the ROM in Toronto I found had more interntaional content and they don't compare to the museums in Europe. Quote

The Capital, the White House, the monuments aren't what I was talking about, more about the smithsonian's. Generally speaking, when people visit a nation's capital, it's not to learn about the rest of the world. For example. I didn't visit Ottawa hoping to learn more about Europe or Asia, and I wasn't critical when I didn't. I found it to be very Canadian, and since I was in Canada, I found it to be just what I had expected/hoped for. There's cool stuff in there but even the ROM in Toronto I found had more interntaional content and they don't compare to the museums in Europe. Personally, having been to Toronto, Amsterdam, and Paris, the three cities you mentioned, I've never noticed that they were any less focused on their own history in museums comparable to the Smithsonian than Washington, D.C. is, but if the Smithsonian isn't what you're looking for, try visiting NYC or Chicago or any number of other American cities, then you'll find comparable museums. In the meantime, the very names of most of the museums in the Smithsonian should tell you that it focuses on America, in America's capital. Quote

While the ROM's collection is built heavily on world history, the museum of civilization in ottawa focuses more on the canadian narrative. I'm guessing that national capitals like ottawa and washington will want to place greater emphasis on their own political histories. Europe is different in this regard because they have had fluid borders filled with conquest and invasion, and a colonial history that has given them access to much of the world's treasures. But, while they have pieces from the rest of the world, I feel like they have been absorbed by the country holding them and are treated as national properties. The example that comes quickly to mind are the egyptian obelisks the dot Rome. Quote
Smallc Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Yes, much like in Washington D.C. is America centric, Ottawa is pretty Canada centric. The Canadian Museum of Civilization The Canadian Museum of Nature The Canadian War Museum The Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada The National Gallery of Canada The Royal Canadian Mint (collectors minting location) Canada Agriculture Museum Canada Science and Technology Museum etc, etc, etc. Quote
groupeii Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 (edited) http://www.thestar.com/yourcitymycity/article/780571--should-toronto-go-it-alone?bn=1 Interesting points by the author and commentators. Would allow the Ontario province to focus more on rural issues while Toronto could handle it's own urban issues. I personally like it as just within the borders of the "city of Toronto" 11 billion in GST and PST fly out the door. Being able to keep approximately 62% of that money would lead to a gigantic cash infusion that would lead to upgrades to services across the GTA. Creates the problem of "Where does Toronto end?" You'd have to include the 4 surrounding regions, possibly further. Oh, have I mentioned yet that it'll NEVER happen? Oh well, it's an interesting discussion. It actually might make more sense to have Northern Ontario join Manitoba. The same true of Northern Quebec, or just have Northern Quebec and Manitoba turned into territories. They were originally. Northern Ontario was part of the North West Territories the district of Keewatin and Patricia etc.. It would probably be better administered as a territory with more scope and local representation. Southern Ontario is all mostly within 2 or 3 hours of Toronto, so it ain't that much of a gap but northern ontario is 7+ hours up to 15 or more hours from Toronto by car. Even after 100 years still some areas only have a few hundred or thousand people in them. It might make sense administratively - but at the same time there are lots of developments that will hopefully be bringing in cash to the provinces coffers. The GTA is expanding regardless, it is all the way to Guelph and Kitchener in terms of service such as go transit that is around 1 hour surrounding toronto by car within the External GTA sphere now. That is about 1/4 of Soutern Ontario and reaches all the way to Niagra Falls. BUffalo is a sister city of the Greater Toronto Sphere. Eg. Have Ottawa join "Southern" Quebec or turned into a federal district that is connected to an enlarged Federal Algonkwin park. Turn everything north of the trans Canada into the territory of New Ontario A city state and "Federal Territories" version of Canada would work much better than a provincial model. Smallc Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 Yeah, sure. Lets just shred the Constitution while we're at it. Manitoba is the 5th most populous province. Why would Manitoba become a territory? Quote

I've been to both but never got to the museums which was a disappointment for me. As for Toronto and Paris, the ROM focuses heavily on international themes. They have things from pretty much everywhere. There is Canadian content but it's heavily outweighed by things from abroad. For such a relatively small museum, the egyptian wing is really good. Everything in the big Paris museums are international in character. Everything, I found at least, was done more by date and period than where it comes from. The Louvre has a French Painting section, then again, some of the most known paintings are by French painters of French scenes, such as "Liberty Leading the People." I also have to distinguish between world renowned museums and going to DC. I agree, you go to a city to learn about it, but I wouldn't include major museums in that. That's all my point was. There's a difference between Musee D'Orsay and the Eiffel Tower. In the meantime, the very names of most of the museums in the Smithsonian should tell you that it focuses on America, in America's capital. Completely fair point. Quote
