M.Dancer Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 (edited) I found this funny ...and sad. So we are launching a new horizontal trade magazine...small circulation but with high production values. It will be printed on 60 lbs coated stock with a 100 lbs cover. Being the good environmental stewards we are, we planned to use recycled paper. We meet with the printer...the cost of recycled paper is over 20% more...but the kicker... The recycled paper is made in Germany. Factor in highway transport, ocean freighter, highway transport in Canada...the carbon foot print is larger than using 100% new paper. But you do get to put the green recycled logo in the magazine Edited February 18, 2010 by M.Dancer Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us

M.Dancer Posted February 18, 2010 Author Report Posted February 18, 2010 Got a link or something? No sorry. It's the printers quote on my desk and the conversation why the price is so much higher than new stock. Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
Wilber Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 No sorry. It's the printers quote on my desk and the conversation why the price is so much higher than new stock. First hand info, neat. Not really surprising. As with many so called "green" things, the environmental costs of shipping them or their components half way around the world is not factored in to their greenness. Oleg Bach Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Carbon foot print coupons = a person who has enough money to destroy the world making more money. Quote

It's pretty hard to get a big-picture of the costs of something. I linked to an article awhile ago about the true costs of local farming versus shipping produce that made the case that local farming, in Canada anyway, wasn't a better option because of the excess energy it took to fertilize the soil. We had great soil everywhere that did not need fertilization...but we developed right over top of it - paved it over so Italian builders could be millionares - WHO once they ran out of clients to buy home lobbied Ottawa for more immigration - not that we needed it - just that the developers were simpltons and did not know what to do with their wealth other than make more. Sounds like your company may want to look around for other suppliers. There is plenty of recycled paper available in Canada, in fact Canada is a major exporter of recycled paper products. Quote

There is plenty of recycled paper available in Canada, in fact Canada is a major exporter of recycled paper products. Well firstly, it is the printer who supplies the paper, that comes in huge rolls. For the amount we would use to print 10,000 copies, 4 times a year, it would be hugely expensive no matter where it is made. Secondly, not all recycled paper is equal. The weight of the coated stock limits how many suppliers there are. Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
