GostHacked Posted December 17, 2009 Report Posted December 17, 2009 http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/12/17/insurgents-hack-drones/ The stolen video feeds also indicate that U.S. adversaries continue to find simple ways of counteracting sophisticated American military technologies. Low tech wins again it seems. If this continues, the drones will be grounded until the flaw is fixed. The more things are connected the easier it is for this type of thing to happen. No matter how much security you have in place, there is always a little crack in the line of defenses. It would have been a nightmare if the Iranians had able to take control of the drone and bring it home. Quote

It would have been a nightmare if the Iranians had able to take control of the drone and bring it home. They'd need quite a bit more 'low tecnology' to actually take over a drone. It'd be easier for the baddies to build their own drones. Pretty funny, though...they'd get a YouTube view of their own destruction. DogOnPorch Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 Right. Well what do YOU call folks who set off bombs in marketplaces...throw acid in women's faces...cut off people's heads? I think it is more yourself who wants to revise what a terrorist is. What should we all be calling these nice folks, naiomiglover? Freedom fighters? Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

You are talking about Taliban/Al Queda in Afghanistan throwing acid on school girls and extremists, who are not in Iran, blowing themselves up in marketplace or cutting people's heads. There was no question where this happened. My comment was towards DogsOnPorch and his reference to Iranians being terrorists who pour acid on faces and blow themselves up in streets. DogOnPorch Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 Iranian-Backed Insurgents Hack U.S. Drones WASHINGTON -- Militants in Iraq have used $26 off-the-shelf software to intercept live video feeds from U.S. Predator drones, potentially providing them with information they need to evade or monitor U.S. military operations. Senior defense and intelligence officials said Iranian-backed insurgents intercepted the video feeds by taking advantage of an unprotected communications link in some of the remotely flown planes' systems. Shiite fighters in Iraq used software programs such as SkyGrabber -- available for as little as $25.95 on the Internet -- to regularly capture drone video feeds, according to a person familiar with reports on the matter. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/12/17/insurgents-hack-drones/ Iranians? GostHacked Posted December 21, 2009 Author Report Posted December 21, 2009 No matter who is doing the hacking, the US military knew about the flaw but never fixed it until this year. You figure if you spend that much money developing a system, you'd at least try to make it as secure as possible. Who'd ever think a 30 dollar program off the net would compromise a multi-million dollar system. You are going to find many low tech approaches to the US military power from terrorist organizations or countries that are on the US's shitlist. The technology is heavily used and relied on too much to get the job done. Sure it is only a video feed hijack and not hijacking the control system of the drone, but if that did happen, you'd find the drone fleet grounded in a hurry and a patch developed to secure the flaw.
