jbg
Most religions have a method of atoning for sins, since you cannot rewrite the past. The Catholic religion has confession. I am not familiar with other religious practices, other than of course Judaism. The Jewish religion requires a fasting from sundown to sundown. I don't drink or eat again till around 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. However, that is not the real focus. (link to source) For transgressions against God, the Day of Atonement atones; but for transgressions of one human being against another, the Day of Atonement does not atone until they have made peace with one another. Thus, the core values of the Jewish religion are expressed near the opening of a Yom Kippur service. The concept is that going to services only heals the relationship with G-d. True atonement is to the community and to the people you've dealt with, perhaps a bit sharply, during the year. The hard part is facing those people, and making amends. That is never easy, as this column in a Duluth, MN (not exactly a hotbed of Judaism) newspaper observed (link, excerpts below): At sunset this evening Yom Kippur begins, the holiest day of the Jewish year. It’s 24 hours of fasting and introspection, and asking forgiveness from our creator. ... and from each other: “For transgressions against God, the Day of Atonement atones,” the New Union Prayer Book reads, “but for transgressions of one human being against another, the Day of Atonement does not atone until they have made peace with one another.” That’s the part about Judaism that makes it tough to practice sometimes. It’s easy to ask God for forgiveness; unless a bolt of lightning says otherwise, it’s probably accepted. But having to individually ask humans is much harder, and humbling. With that, have an easy fast, and a healthy year. Edited September 28, 2009 by jbg
