The majority of succesful modern economies are based on one of two paradigms: (1) natural resources and/or (2) technology, innovation, and information. Obviously, if a country is to prosper economically via the extraction of natural resources, it needs to have such resources. This is the case for Russia for example, and also for many nations in the middle-east that have managed to become quite wealthy and prosperous in recent years. As for the second option, that requires an educated and intelligent population, which indeed requires a culture that supports science, research, and the pursuit of knowledge. Examples of nations based on this paradigm would be the US, Israel, Japan, Germany, etc. Of course, culture plays a part in both cases. Some nations manage to remain in poverty despite great store of natural resources, usually due to corrupt and incompetent leadership, enabled by a culture that accepts tyranny. And it is only nations whose cultures allow intellectual freedom, the advancement of science, and free market competition and innovation that can compete for long as places where the economy prospers due to innovation and technology. Now as for racial diversity... race still has a strong association with culture. Whether here in Canada where we specifically encourage different races to maintain their distinct cultures or in the US where the idea is a "melting pot of cultures", one's ethnic origin is still strongly correlated with one's culture. And many of the cultures that we are importing today by the hundreds of thousands are not exactly those that prize intellectual freedom and scientific pursuit. Rather, some of them emphasize strict adherence to dogma. I don't think this is particularly helpful for us if we want to achieve or maintain paradigm (2). Can't say which cultures we are importing by the 100's of 1000's that don't value education... How many Indians have won the nobel prize? 5? Do Chinese value education? How many prizes have they won? 6? I would certainly not argue that everyone who comes here has identical values as you or I...but I would suggest that most who come here share some common values that we hold...and one of those is education. There is this guy from BC I know, a comedian and a Sikh. One of his routines touches upon racial epitaths and stereotyping..It goes something like...Indians are called a lot of names; Paki, Push Button, pull start, raghead..doctor....
