Democrats Split on Stimulus as Job Losses Mount, Deficit Soars

July 8 (Bloomberg) -- Democrats who control the levers of power in Washington are divided over whether to push for more deficit spending to end the recession and stem job losses, complicating the possibility of a second stimulus bill.

“We need to be open to whether or not we need further action,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, told reporters yesterday.

The U.S. should consider drafting a second stimulus package focusing on infrastructure projects because the bill approved in February was “a bit too small,” said Laura Tyson, an adviser to Obama during last year’s presidential campaign who now sits on the White House’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board.

Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat whose home state has a 12 percent jobless rate, told ABCNews.com that a second stimulus is “probably needed.” Action by Congress would “probably take place towards the end of the year,” Whitehouse said.

Epic failure.

Harper seems to be against it, but Obama wants it. As does Gordon Brown-

Harper urged leaders to complete the stimulus initiatives that are already underway, before committing new funds.

"My own thought is before there's talk of additional stimulus, I would urge all leaders to focus first on making the stimulus that's announced actually gets delivered," Harper said. "That's been our focus in Canada and I would urge the same priority elsewhere."

Harper's position may clash with some other leaders, including U.S. President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who appear to be in favour of committing further funds to the recovery effort.

In other words, done deal.

So you're saying that Harper doesn't support what Obama and the Dems are gearing up to do? What does it matter what Harper's opinion is on a thread about what Democrats in the U.S. are doing?

If Obama would actually spend some serious coin NOW WHEN IT"S NEEDED instead of offloading most of the package for 2010 and 2011 to attempt to buy votes, the economy might actually be doing much better even at this early date.

It matters that Canada tried to be diligent in paying its deficit under previous governments, while other countries such as the US did not take this responsible approach. Canadian taxpayers had to ante up the money from their pockets to balance the budget. As a result Canada was supposed to be better off than most of the others, and maybe it really is. But our economy is small compared to the big powers. When they take a nosedive, down we go too, despite all the years of careful budgeting. All that work and sacrifice for nothing, and I want to know why that is.

Despite all that good advice, Harper will be ignored by these guys.
