Empathy is to see out of their eyes - sympathy means to suffer with them - looks like she is now part of the experiment. These thugs saw an opportunity..short term gain though hostage taking - Maybe the Taliban are more like Somali pirates than religous zealots - It's about the money...so how much do they want? Not that they would expose them selves as cut throat profiteers..that would hurt their reputation...might be wise to secretly offer them the money.

I'm not sure what to think about this story yet. The only information I got from this thread is that she converted to Islam after 9/11. That doesn't necessarily mean that she is pro-terrorism. Perhaps she was concerned that people were wrongly labeling all Muslims as radicals and she wanted to convert to extol the virtues of Islam, where the media was only covering the radicals that bastardize the religion.

And just because I know someone is going to misunderstand me, I guess I have to throw this caveat out there. I'm not saying that she isn't pro-Islamic terrorist. I'm not making any statement about why she converted or what her intentions were. What I am trying to get from this post is a better understanding about WHY she converted to Islam.

I find it highly unlikely that any reasonable person would see the murder of thousands of innocent civilians on 9/11 as something worth backing. What kind of person sees innocent civilians killed and decides they want to join that cause? It's not impossible, and if this truly is the case, then I feel no remorse to say she truly deserves to be mixed up with the kind of people that would kill an innocent woman. After all, this is the kind of actions that she would be supporting in this case. However, if she simply joined Islam to show that not everyone is radical and there is a reasonable and virtuous side to the religion, then my heart goes out to her.

Some seem to forget that our soldiers are in Afghanistan fighting for the freedom of ordinary Muslim Afghans from the extremist Taliban.

It is important for us Canadians to be able to make that distinction as well, just like our soldiers have to.

Being Muslim does not make one a fundamentalist nor a terrorist. A lot of people here seem to have forgotten that the people our Canadian soldiers are fighting to defend (from the Taliban) are also Muslim.
