The only thing I'll add is that the polls are a one way battle right now. Harper has made it very clear to his party that he doesn't want to appear to be attacking anyone while working on the economy. Meanwhile the Liberals are already sounding war drums.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it but the polls are more important come election time.

My personal view of what Harper did with the economic statement was play games and that it was his attempt at getting ready for an election while Dion was still at the helm.

I agree. He never had any intention of cancelling it. It just made the other parties look bad.

The subsidy is one of the most democratic things this country has. It makes sure that every vote counts, and takes some of the power away from those who claim entitlement based on the size of their donation.

Based on the amount of taxes I pay, I don't begrudge $ 1.95 It's a cup of coffee.

No.

I would agree that the part of the economic statement that referred to party financing was an attempt to kick the Liberals and Bloc where it would hurt them most.

It doesn't hurt the Bloc. They don't have to fundraise. Also, the Coalition was not formed to opposed the subsidy. It was created to oppose a fictitous economic statement and the failure to act on the economic crisis, as promised.

Harper's insane response to the Coalition cost him more than Ignatieff and if Jack Layton doesn't let it go, it could cost him as well.

The Conservatives will not use the Coalition in any attack ads next election; with Harper's own 2004 Coalition letter and video, only painting him as a liar.

You're way out to lunch here.

It doesn't hurt the Bloc.

It hurts the Bloc the most, BY FAR. Because they don't fundraise, ALL of their campaign money comes from the subsidy. Without the subsidy they'd have nothing. They'd have to get off their asses and actually (gasp) fundraise.

Also, the Coalition was not formed to opposed the subsidy. It was created to oppose a fictitous economic statement and the failure to act on the economic crisis, as promised.

Bulls**t. For the Liberals it was 95% about the subsidy. If you don't think it was about the subsidy you're so naive about Canadian politics I don't think anything anyone says will get through to you.

The Conservatives will not use the Coalition in any attack ads next election; with Harper's own 2004 Coalition letter and video, only painting him as a liar.

He's already painted himself a liar, opportunist and hypocrite. At this point nothing can affect his credibility.

What? There is nothing democratic about it.

It makes sure that every vote counts,

Every vote does count.

It doesn't matter how much money you raise, it's how many votes you get. Election spending doesn't necessarily translate into votes. The media has far more influence than paid advertising ever will in an election.

Exactly. It's basically a tax to support parties who can't support themselves.

Yes, but advertising still has an effect if it's done properly. The CPC did an amazing job smearing Dion last election. If you have enough money to spend and you send the right message, you can make just a big a difference as the media does.

There are a lot of people that don't read the news, listen to the news or watch the news but still vote. When they're watching Survivor or Gossip Girls or whatever the ads will reach them at least.
