An Islamic cleric from Melbourne has told followers it is permitted to force their wives to have sex with them and to hit them.

"You'll beat them... but this is the last resort after you have advised them for a long, long time, then you smack them, you beat them."

"Even if her husband was to ask her for a sexual relationship and she is preparing the bread on the stove she must leave it and come and respond to her husband," he said.

"This is just to shape them up, shape up woman."

As we can see here is some more from mainstream Islam. These aren't radicals but everyday Muslims who believe these things. I find it incredible that the left wing support these people and support them behaving in this matter in the name of freedom of religion.

This behavior is outrageous and is nothing more than religious sanctioned rape. How far do we let this freedom of religion go?

Hey pal, what's the meaning of this uncovering of the truth? Nobody wants to hear about Muslim teachings WRT women! Or gays. Or abortion. I mean, who are we in the west to be so judgemental, huh? Who do we think we are with our women-are-equal and gays-can-marry. We shouldn't be forcing our culture on others or looking down on them(although if we see a muslim beating his woman in the street, we should look down and mind our own freakin' business).

How dare you judge Muslims for beating and raping their women!

And from the link presented, how do we see this?

It is outrageous. But, despite what the Imam says, it is still illegal to rape people in Australia. I don't think Australian law makes an exception for religious belief. So even in your cockamamy world where muslims regularly beat and rape thier wives it is illegal to do so. Despite anyones wierdo religious sanctioned behaviour.

You see? Freedom of religion is being curtailed.

What overstretched pot and kettle claptrap!

Mr. Canada, this story is for you:

A few years ago, I was sent as liaison to a conference of battered womens groups. During the coffee break, I found myself sitting beside an ex-neighbour whom I hadn't seen in years. I asked her what brought her to such an event- and that was the first I knew that she had been regularly pummelled and/or raped by her husband.

She elaborated to say that when she went to her (devout) family for help, they told her that she should shape up and try harder to be a better wife; and when she went to her priest for help and advice, she was told she should shape up and work harder to be a better wife.

So she kept her mouth shut, and put up with the rapes and beatings-- for a while. Then she dumped her husband, her church and her family in one nasty package, and hasn't looked back.

Welcome to X-tian Canada, Mr. C.

Peter, you missed the point.

What Muslims believe is the point. What is done behind closed doors is what is at issue here. And you can be sure that in Muslim countries, they condone this kind of behavior legally.

Molly, in your haste to provide a condemnation of the church in response to a thread on what Muslims believe, you didn't actually mention whether you support the Muslim beatings of their wives or not.

At any rate, what the woman did in your story(leaving her family/church) would never be allowed in a Muslim country. She would be hunted down and then probably sentenced to death for her actions. How's that for justice? In Canada she would be given all manner of support and she could have her husband charged for his acts.

Why is it hard for some to see the difference here?

This is phoney logic. There is no doubting that such things happen even here, but less and less often. Very few families would tell her to shape up these days, much less priests, unless they are members of an immigrant group. However, most Muslims are from cultures which are extremely paternalistic and mysogenistic by our standards, and so such behaviour is far more likely to be accepted and condoned.

I don't miss the point at all. What do you or MrC know about what is done behind closed doors? Nothing!

I understand that Sharia Law allows the smacking of women to encourage them to do what the husband wants. Which is one of the reasons I am not planning conversion anytime soon.

That is not to say that Muslim husbands regularly beat and rape thier wives, is it? Yet that is exactly what MrC claims. And I say that is the usual bigot-bullshit. There is no muslim cleric that I know of who claims its perfectly fine for mulsim men to beat and rape thier wives.

There is a renewed push to have Sharia Law here in Canada and to make polygamy legal. These people have no desire to assimilate only conquer, why can't people wake up and see this?

Sure, it says so right in the article. Direct quotes from a western Imam. It isn't racist to criticize anyone or any group sorry. I'm sorry you support this behavior. Women have struggled for many years for equality and you're trying to undo that by supporting this Imam...shame, shame, shame.

I will let your own words answer, taken from the Pope thread in this section.

The beating and raping of women effects society. If this is tolerated the women's equality rights will be thrown out the window. We cannot allow women to become victims and looking the other way as you suggest will only promote this and send the message to some men that the beating and raping of women is ok. I disagree with you guyser, I don't think the beating and raping of women is ok, I'm sorry you feel this way and I have to wonder why you hate women so much.

Women have struggled for far too long to allow the systematic beating and raping in the name of freedom of religion. You disagree with me, well that's just sad sir. Women deserve better than society burying their head in the sand and pretending it's not happening as you suggest we do.

If Sharia Law takes place in Canada,,, and I seriously doubt it will, it won't be the fault of the Muslims. It will be the fault of our politicians and leaders that have bent to the will of those people. So we can't blame the Muslims for the downfall in Canada. It is our government that fails us. Simple as that. Put the blame where it should belong.... our government.

And I think recently, the Jews lost their 'court' because the Canadian government could not grant it to Muslims, so to be equal, the Jews lost theirs as well. And that sounds totaly fair in my view.

"To prohibit and outlaw Christian and Jewish mediation committees because there is an issue within the Muslim community itself doesn't seem to follow a very fair path," B'nai B'rith Canada executive vice president Frank Dimant told CanWest News Service.

Seems fair to me !!!!

"I believe that society is best served when individuals are free to take their actions based on the fundamental freedom of religion that is a cornerstone of Canadian democracy and protected by our constitution," John Weston, a Christian constitutional lawyer and Conservative candidate for West Vancouver, told CC.com.

The constitution is an important document. And should inherently make everyone equal under the law. Now to make this happen, we cannot have different sets of Laws for different religions when it comes to legal matters.

The beating and raping of women effects society.

But you arent a woman, so why do you care?

That is the same logic you apply in other situations.

We cannot allow women to become victims and looking the other way as you suggest will only promote this and send the message to some men that the beating and raping of women is ok. I disagree with you guyser, I don't think the beating and raping of women is ok, I'm sorry you feel this way and I have to wonder why you hate women so much.

Please show me where I 1) suggested one look the other way? and 2) why or where did I say I hate women?

You disagree with me, well that's just sad sir.

Actually, agreeing with you would be sad.....like the holocaust being fictional to some degree , wanting the disposal of both arabs and jews, marginalyzing the gays and lesbians in society, deporting immigrants.

Happily, I hold myself to a higher standard, not one handed done by some guys that wrote a book.

How many muslim clerics do you know, and how many of these did you survey on this particular topic before you posted above remarks? I already know the answer to that, which is to say that it's funny to hear you making broad pronouncements on what other people know(nothing).

I see you ignored my comparison between a woman's rights when fleeing from an abusive husband in a Muslim country vs Canada. Carry on then, say hi to all those 'clerics' you know.

A religious leader, a Muslim Cleric, saying that women should be raped and beaten is appalling. I don't see how some people here are disagreeing with this. Womens equality is important to me I'm sorry if that some posters here don't share my view.

We must ensure that Sharia Law is never enacted in Canada. We must fight them on this issue to the end.

It's rather ironic having a Catholic moaning about the paternalism and masogonism of Islam. Catholicism won't let women be priests. Catholicism pretty much regards, at the moment a women conceives a baby, her to be little more than a walking uterus, with *all* the concern and attention suddenly turned to the fetus, and a general distaste by the higher-level clergy in the Church for anything remotely feminist. Heck, women aren't even allowed to use contraception to control their own body.

The rules state you must stay on topic. I'm sorry you cannot control your rabid hate for the Catholic CHurch and Christianity as a whole. I'm sorry that Christianity hurt you in the past but don't take it out on me.

This topic is about the Muslim Imam's saying it's ok to beat and rape women. You have yet to respond to it. Will you do so in your nest post is the question.

No, I'm going to keep taunting you about your favorite church's hatred and fear of women.

I agree completely. Shariah Law must never become part of the legal system. By extension, no other religious laws should be either.

For sure I agree. That isn't to say that religious people shouldn't be allowed a say in how their country is run. They pay taxes too.

Well of course, but that doesn't mean, say, they're *religious* beliefs should become law. For instance, I shouldn't be bound by the Catholic Church's view on, say, condoms.
