capricorn Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Al-Qaeda cell killed by Black Death 'was developing biological weapons' The group of 40 terrorists were reported to have been killed by the plague at a training camp in Algeria earlier this month. It was initially believed that they could have caught the disease through fleas on rats attracted by poor living conditions in their forest hideout. But there are now claims the cell was developing the disease as a weapon to use against western cities. Experts said that the group was developing chemical and biological weapons. Dr Igor Khrupinov, a biological weapons expert at Georgia University, told The Sun: "Al-Qaeda is known to experiment with biological weapons. And this group has direct communication with other cells around the world. "Contagious diseases, like ebola and anthrax, occur in northern Africa. It makes sense that people are trying to use them against Western governments." Dr Khrupinov, who was once a weapons adviser to the Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, added: "Instead of using bombs, people with infectious diseases could be walking through cities." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/...al-weapons.html It looks like this group needs a few more hours of laboratory training. Oh well, 40 fewer terrorists to worry about and not a shot was fired. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." Will Rogers
DogOnPorch Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 (edited) It certainly is a very disturbing event. If such a bio-weapon was released into a major airport...say Denver...yikes. Shows they're busy little bees off in their caves, I suppose. I doubt the plague would do the same damage in our society that it did in the 1340s (roughly 1 in 3), but it would still be nasty sort of attack. In a place like India...bets are off. It's variola that I worry about. Apparently our smallpox inoculations have long worn off (if folks even had one). On the ex-island of Vozrozhdeniya in the shrinking Aral Sea, there's apparently 5,000 tons (!) of weaponized India-1967 smallpox virus that nobody is sure what to do with. This particular strain combines the effects of ebola and smallpox into one happy virus. It's guarded like everything else in the ex-Soviet Union...poorly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_progra...logical_weapons ---------------------------------------- Well there ain't no time to wonder why, Whoopee! we're all gonna die. ---Country Joe and the Fish Edited January 22, 2009 by DogOnPorch Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
DogOnPorch Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 (edited) Here's a recent one (Feb 09) from a Kuwaiti Professor...yikes. ----------------------------------------- Uh, oh...jungo! DogOnPorch Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 A follow-up to the Kuwaiti professor's speech calling for the death of 300,000+ Americans via the use of anthrax. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
Oleg Bach Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 What, no invasion of Algeria? Jezzz - we better dump the Afghnistan mission and get our asses down there. So why do we have knowledge though common media and our intelligence agents don't have this knowledge? Black Plague is the least of our worries...our greatest worry should be why are we not where we are supposed to be as far as keeping a handle on those that wish to destroy us? Quote

Oleg Bach Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 I'd watch the Kuwaiti fellow's speech...ten minutes or so. Two computers in the room - one with sound the other not - I am on the not. Perhaps I will switch over and have a listen - yes if I am going to be of use I had better make a careful observance. Quote

bariboh Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 In order to weaponize one of the plagues, they would have to develop a strain that is resistant to vaccines. There has been a theraputic plague vaccine around for centuries. The question we should be asking is whether Al Qaeda is sophisticated enough to develop a vaccine-resistant plague. Somehow I doubt that. In my view, the greatest danger related to biological weapons and terrorist groups involves those stolen from labs owned by governments. Quote

Have one older than 10 years? Don't worry...much of Canada is in the same boat. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
