acidburn Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 I really want to go to the Yucatan and try and go scuba diving /swimming through the caves there. Has anyone done this? Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get to do this? Quote

Drea Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 (edited) I've caved a bit before (so minimally that one cannot call it "spelunking" LOL) but I don't think I'd be able to underwater -- what if yah got caught on somethin' down there! Eep! The first time I ever went in a cave I went with two friends. We had a flashlight, 2 candles and three bananas. So prepared were we We skinnied through lots of little openings and came upon an open spot. The boys went off in two different directions then (not far) and I stopped and shone my candle upwards. I saw the most incredibly beautiful sight -- the mineral flow was all different colours as as smooth as could be. No, we didn't bring a camera. I've since been in one small cave on Vancouver Island. Boots, helmets, lunch, cell phones, backup light, ropes and all. It was incredibly fun and I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I had the time. Edited to add: Sorry I don't have any advice on the Yucatan for yah. Edited January 16, 2009 by Drea Quote ...jealous much? Booga Booga! Hee Hee Hee
bill_barilko Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 The proper term is Cenote and the place is loaded with them. Snorkeling is more common than diving though you do need to be certified to dive them-not cheap. They are a large part of the tourist industry in the Yucatan but smaller unknown ones abound if you can speak Spanish it's easy to get off the tourist track. DogOnPorch Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 (edited) This place is cool. Humans have lived there for eons. Pretty touristy these days, mind you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wookey_Hole_Caves ---------------------------- Arrrrrrrrrr. ---Treasure Island Edited January 22, 2009 by DogOnPorch Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
fellowtraveller Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 I swam and snorkelled in cenotes last winter. Did not see anybody diving though. Most of them are not very deep. Quote The government should do something.
