jdobbin Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 Well, there is significant work going on dealing with the Trans Canada through the rockies, but what they need to do now is get to work on improving the highway through Northwestern Ontario.....which is planned and will probably be accelerated. Patchwork still. I support a national strategy in the same vein as Eisenhower's national Interstate program. Quote
jdobbin Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 (edited) I thought that extremely unlikely under Dion, impossible under the Coallition. It is why Dion was defeated in part in the election. As for the coalition, that was a response to Harper looking to cripple the Opposition and going to an election before May. Neither Harper's brinkmanship or the thought of how a coalition would work or be regarded was given much consideration. As for Ignatief, that remains to be seen. I agree. The one thing that appears to have changed is that Ignatieff is focusing on the economy. I think Harper's natural inclination is towards fiscal responsibility. Perhaps Ingatieff will hold his feet to the fire on this. Political realities and popularity motives are behind his spending, and the Liberals have never shied from spending for the same reasons. I don't disagree. But Harper has to control his spending if he is to be credibly regarded as a fiscal conservative. The Liberals did cut spending in the past and can probably and credibly say they will do the same if elected. Harper can see the polls. He can see how turned off the electorate is to a deficit. If he has a few years of deficits under his administration, people won't care how it happened, only who was PM when it happened. Edited December 19, 2008 by jdobbin Quote

The Liberals were also responsible for most of the debt anyways....but we've had that argument before. I'm totally for spending decreases. I've been deeply dissapointed in his Mulroney/Liberal style pandering thus far and if Ignatieff can convince me he's ready to reduce idiotic spending on things like a Human Rights Museum or hugely disproportionate equalization payments to Quebec, he'll immediately have my vote. My main concern for government is the budget. Pay off our debt, lower my taxes, pay for my health care and help with infrastructure, and then F off please. Personally, I think Harper's doing a crap job, but I think it's a less crap job than Dion would have done or an NDP/Liberal coalition. Give us a fiscally conservative majority government, whether it be Liberal or CPC, and please let's end this mess. Smallc Posted December 19, 2008 Author Report Posted December 19, 2008 Patchwork still. I support a national strategy in the same vein as Eisenhower's national Interstate program. I support very much the same thing, but I'm happy to see any progress. Quote
Goat Boy© Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 Well not before Friday. That is when Harper announces he is giving money to Manitoba.Didn't you vote for that man? To attend a secret meeting? To eliminate the Liberal party and secretly join the states? Quote
Goat Boy© Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 It attracts people. It also employs people. 90% of museum staff I have ever seen are volunteers. Quote
Smallc Posted December 19, 2008 Author Report Posted December 19, 2008 90% of museum staff I have ever seen are volunteers. I doubt that a national museum has a volunteer staff. Most of these people will be paid. Quote
jdobbin Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 The Liberals were also responsible for most of the debt anyways....but we've had that argument before. And Mulroney kept spending through two majorities. This blaming of things on the Senate really doesn't wash since Senate could not defeat budgets. Never could. Too late for the museum. It was announced today and unless Ignatieff is PM before February (and anything is possible with this government), then the project will be already in progress. I doubt it would be stopped before the next budget. Harper increased those transfer payments which made me feel a bit queasy when it happened. It is spigot that just keeps flowing. My main concern for government is the budget. Pay off our debt, lower my taxes, pay for my health care and help with infrastructure, and then F off please. I have no problem with programs as long as spending is limited, gives people choices and does not end up going in deficit. Personally, I think Harper's doing a crap job, but I think it's a less crap job than Dion would have done or an NDP/Liberal coalition. Give us a fiscally conservative majority government, whether it be Liberal or CPC, and please let's end this mess. As I said, Dion lost. I am hoping that Ignatieff focuses on the economy and hope that this will put pressure on Harper to do the job he was elected to and not play the brinkmanship game of trying to provoke an election.
