Carinthia Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 Those of us who do not abuse alcohol should now be made to pay more freakin taxes? I am so sick and tired of these idiots who are running the show. This guy is a high profile Doctor. It's not like he has to worry about how much he pays for a bottle of wine. This idiot makes my blood boil! ------------------------------------ Harm reduction, combatting drunk driving and even raising the price of alcohol. Some suggestions from provincial health officer Doctor Perry Kendall in his 2008 'Public health approach to alcohol policy report.' Kendall says the report, which researches alcohol distribution and consumption since 2002, shows both are up. So are harmful behaviours....including binge drinking by teens. He's recommending a five-cent tax on every drink, which would raise up to 100 million dollars for research, prevention and treatment. http://www.cknw.com/Channels/Reg/NewsLocal...aspx?ID=1047095 Quote

If I have ten pints a week, that's 50 cents. I mean, if I already pay $80.plus for a bottle of whisky, i don't think an extra 5 cents, or one dollar will hurt. I support this tax fully. Oleg Bach Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 Just like you raise the price of cigarettes to 10 dollars a pack...all under the premise that you will HELP poor people quit...then when you see the natives turning a tidy profit on smokes...you quietly bring in cheap governmental brands at 4 bucks a pop...hypocrites and liars ..............so now you are going to attempt to take away the only pleasure for the poor - a damned drink! - but of course you are going to tell them you are HELPING them - when you know damned well that just like cigarettes they will do with out food and follow their addictions...boy - you guys are to much///// "Medical Health Officals" - what officals and what's their worth - a person can not even get a doctor these days - and now the witch doctors called "officals" are going to sicken people even more - either outlaw tobacco and alcohol or shut up! Although this is slightly aside from the main theme, I listened as an economist talked about what will happen in the next couple of years. In the past the rising price of oil fed inflation. However, now that oil has dropped it is no longer the leading indicator of inflation. Food on the other hand went up 7.5% just this past year and it looks like it will be the new indicator of inflation. Imagine that in an economy where the poverty rate will grow at faster rates then we have seen since the great depression, food will cost more. I can imagine that since gas prices have dropped and government revenue will drop due to high unemployment and lower wages, the government will look at new ways to tax food to bolster its coffers. No doubt that since cheap fast food outlets do grow in hard economic times that the Conservatives will find a way to claw a tax to help offset the $30 billion deficit they are predicting. After all fast food is the crutch of low income people, and well the Conservatives wouldn;t want to tax the rich any more in hard economic times.....just in case they have to go to election.... No they wouldn't, besides which this would clash with the effort to blame the economic crisis on the un-rich. Kinda like GM trying to blame their workers for poor economic outlook? eyeball Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 I was thinking more like blaming sick people for getting sick. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
