Moonlight Graham Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 From Matthewgood.org: While there are those that believe that the administration of Ronald Reagan was responsible for ending the Cold War, I, along with many others, have long held that the actions of Mikhail Gorbachev played a far greater role. In fact, it could even be argued that Gorbachev was the chief architect of the collapse of the Soviet Union in many ways through reforms such as perestroika and glasnost. For his efforts, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, a distinction that Ronald Reagan was not afforded for what has since become American mythology regarding the ‘defeat’ of the Soviet Union. While it was easy enough for President Reagan to employ aggressive rhetoric and stand at the Brandenberg Gate and exclaim “tear down this wall”, Gorbachev was faced with the actual task of doing it, of defying those within the Polit-Bureau and KGB that opposed his vision, and of risking his own life to achieve the beginnings of Russian reform. In short, I respect the man. That said; The New York Times featured an Op-Ed yesterday written by Gorbachev entitled "Russia Never Wanted A War" that should not be overlooked… Here's a link to the Gorbachev Op-Ed.
