RB Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 (edited) I highly recommend this show! Anyone living in/near Toronto shouldn't pass up the opportunity to see it. I agree the show is good - I never seen a show twice - but I think I will go to see it again - some of my girlfriends didn't see it so we are out for a "girls night out" Edited October 9, 2008 by RB Quote
Guest American Woman Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Sounds like a really fun "girls' night out!"-- I'm sure those who haven't seen it will really enjoy it, and it's a show I would see twice, too, so I hope you enjoy it as much the second time around. Quote
AngusThermopyle Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 (edited) I just can't stand musicals Well since I made that statement I've watched a musical that I really enjoyed, would watch again in fact. It was Sweeney Todd with Jonmmy Depp, the music was good and the whole atmosphere was excellent and entirely suitable to the story. So, as you can see I can no longer claim to despise musicals. Still don't enjoy musical theater though. Edited November 17, 2008 by AngusThermopyle Quote I yam what I yam - Popeye

AngusThermopyle Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 Did your husband go with you? Seriously man have you seen Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter? He can't sing ( although he does a pretty good job in the context of his role) but the cast that supports him can, for the most part. The aspect that I enjoyed the most was the atmosphere that Tim Burton created and the way that Depp and Helena Bonham Carter (Is there a shorter way to say her name?) Interacted within that atmosphere and made it more involving. The story Itself is a timeless one of loss and revenge, and the eventual futility and finality of both. This story is delivered eloquently by both the lead actors and supporting cast, even if they do sing 3/4 of the story. However in the end its the work of Tim Burton that makes this movie. He created a dark visual spectacle of London complete with the violence and brutality that was common at that time. The music only serves to accentuate this aspect being both hopefull and full of despair at the same time. So give it a chance Guyser, with an open mind and actually listen to the story, its a good one. Sorry if I sound like a syndicated movie review in this last post but I really enjoyed this movie. August1991 Posted December 21, 2008 Author Report Posted December 21, 2008 (edited) Is this thread still alive? Wow. A friend discussed Mamma Mia (the Movie) with me and convinced me that I was wrong. (I can't believe that I had this discussion or that I'm posting about it here. Such is life.) ----- My friend (an older women) argued that the movie version was wrongly cast. According to her, Michelle Pfeiffer should have had the lead, not Meryl Streep. Jude Law should have been the young guy to marry, not Dominic Cooper. On reflection, I have to agree on both counts. Meryl Streep said: "It was criminal how much fun we had and, trust me, it's not always that way!" Figures. Edited December 21, 2008 by August1991 Quote

August1991 Posted December 23, 2008 Author Report Posted December 23, 2008 (edited) How about sacharine sweet, insipid and boring? And how would you describe a movie involving car chases/crashes? Edited December 23, 2008 by August1991 Quote
RB Posted December 25, 2008 Report Posted December 25, 2008 Is this thread still alive? Wow. I did not see the movie, but one night I caught a bit of documentary on the making of the movie mamma mia. The producers took the songs and made the lyrics meaningful, the plot developed from of the lyrics. I wasn't sure whether it was the theatre coming to live in the movie per sa. Quote
M.Dancer Posted December 25, 2008 Report Posted December 25, 2008 Is that the Maori version? How about sacharine sweet, insipid and boring? Oops, sorry, thats more than one word. I watched it with my 9 year old daughter Never the less I was impressed that they managed to weave so many allusions to greek myth, from foam born aphrodite to the marauding maenads .... Also, given that the songs were written by a man, it's surpising how sensoitive they are to te female spirit and voice. The only think It didn't like was that Donna's inn was called Villa Donna....when in Rome.... Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
AngusThermopyle Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 And how would you describe a movie involving car chases/crashes? Probably as being predictable and boring. Why? How would you describe it? Quote I yam what I yam - Popeye
acidburn Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 So I saw the broadway version in Toronto almost 10 years ago and I hadn't seen the movie version until this weekend. And I am going to have to say that it was better than I expected. Meryl Streep DOES totally carry the movie with her enthusiasm. I was impressed bby her singing even - I had no idea she had THAT kind of range. I enjoyed this movie. It's true that Pierce Brosnan can't sing but who cares - it's only Hollywood. Meryl Streep's enthusiasm carried the show anyway. I regret that I didn't see this on Broadway since it really is a theatre musical but the screen version works well in a Jewison Jesus Christ Superstar, cast production kind of way. Quote
