August1991 Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 I enjoyed this movie. It's true that Pierce Brosnan can't sing but who cares - it's only Hollywood. Meryl Streep's enthusiasm carried the show anyway. I regret that I didn't see this on Broadway since it really is a theatre musical but the screen version works well in a Jewison Jesus Christ Superstar, cast production kind of way. Quote
M.Dancer Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 Funny thing about Brosnan, if you were to ever meet him 2 things would strike you, 1 is how tall he is....6' 2 or more....and secondly how thick his irish accent is when he uses his normal voice which is very rich.... guyser Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 I enjoyed this movie. I will wait for video. I regret that I didn't see this on Broadway since it really is a theatre musical but the screen version works well in a Jewison Jesus Christ Superstar, cast production kind of way. You missed a lightweight fun couple of hours. Nothing more nor less. I enjoyed it but it really wasnt what I call "theatre" but more like professional amusement. Certainly was better than the stage version of Lord of the Rings . Now that is one evening I would love to have back. 'Cept for the dinner beforehand. Quote

I regret that I didn't see this on Broadway since it really is a theatre musical but the screen version works well in a Jewison Jesus Christ Superstar, cast production kind of way. I enjoyed the movie too. A lot. My daughter, who saw the Broadway version with me, not so much-- she definitely preferred the Broadway show. I agree with you, though-- it didn't really matter that Brosnan can't sing, yet one couldn't help but notice that he couldn't sing. I have to say Meryl Streep surprised me-- I had no idea she could belt it out like that. I thought the movie was well cast, -- I enjoyed all the characters. I also loved the scenery. Someone sure did a good job in that department, too. I left the theater wanting to plan a trip to Greece. At any rate, I'm sure you'll get another chance to see it on Broadway. Quote
fellowtraveller Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Hate to disagree...well not really. I caught 10 minutes of Mamma Mia waiting for my movie to start at a cineplex. It was the wedding scene, where poor Pierce had to stand around looking interested while Meryl warbled her way through an ABBA classic. I'll never see the rest for two reasons. I loathe Meryl Streep as an actress, IMO she is incredibly overrated. Second, I loathe ABBA and every bsecond of the overproduced bland pap they inflicted on the world. Other than that, pretty good. Quote The government should do something.
AngusThermopyle Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Second, I loathe ABBA and every bsecond of the overproduced bland pap they inflicted on the world. Thank you, I didn't want to be the first one say that. Generally I just can't stand musicals or musical theater productions. Give me a first class company performing MacBeth any day over Cats or Rent or Mama Mia, or anything of that type for that matter. By the way, I can't stand the Sound Of Music either, I'm just not a musical sort of guy, unless its music music, you know, without people dressed in cat suits prancing around. Quote I yam what I yam - Popeye
guyser Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 , unless its music music, you know, without people dressed in cat suits prancing around. You mean like...Kiss , Motley Crue , Poison , Bjork , Pat Benatar? RIP Wendy O Williams.....perhaps not in a "cat" suit but I did see her.....er maybe I shouldnt say it. Quote

As a kid I watched my brother when he played for the Waterloo Siskins Jr B team. The song "Waterloo" played all the time. Being a kid and in awe, I could only love that song. So I grew to like...yes like...ABBA. Now when they played the Elmira Sugar Kings..... Quote
Guest American Woman Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 (edited) ...I grew to like...yes like...ABBA. Me too! And I even had no problem admitting that way before Mama Mia came out. We have tickets to see We Will Rock You while I'm in Toronto-- which is a musical based on Queen's music, so I guess Queen isn't really music either. Edited September 5, 2008 by American Woman Quote
AngusThermopyle Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 (edited) You mean like...Kiss , Motley Crue , Poison , Bjork , Pat Benatar? Don't like any of those either, especially not Kiss. I prefer Jethro Tull, Yes, the Stones, the Who and also Queen. AW, I've seen Queen twice, once for the Jazz tour and the following year for the News Of The World tour. Fantastic band, but I'll still take a pass on the musical. I do believe that I said I don't like Musicals and prefer my music without people prancing around in cat suits. Actually I've heard that We Will Rock You is worth seeing. The only problem I have is that I've seen Freddie at his peak, pretty hard act to follow. Besides, I thought We Will Rock You is more a tribute sort of thing than a Musical. Is it? I really don't know because I don't pay much attention to that sort of thing. I will be going to see AC DC when they tour this year though, I haven't seen them since their first North American tour. I do believe that I said I don't like Musicals and prefer my music without people prancing around in cat suits. A lot of musical theatre doesn't involve cat suits. You said musicals weren't music music, and evidently I misunderstood what you were saying. I think it's a regular show. From what I understand, it's science fiction/futuristic, but it is a story line. I will be going to see AC DC when they tour this year though, I haven't seen them since their first North American tour. I haven't seen that many concerts, but I've seen lots of musical theatre. I enjoy them both, though. I"ve been taking in more concerts lately now that a lot of the 'old' groups are making the casino rounds and I still enjoy listening to them. AC/DC should be a good show. Angus, I was justing bustin' yer chops since Jethro and definitely the Stones are prancers and wore catsuits at one time or another. Now Queen? Short of Elton John, Freddie was certainly a prancer. Freddie Mercury, to me had, bar none, one of the finest voices for music that I ever heard. I will only put a few up there on par with Sir Freddie. RIP. The only problem I have is that I've seen Freddie at his peak, pretty hard act to follow. Consider yourself lucky and I am envious. Never saw Queen live. Was a fan the first time I heard the self titled debut album.(probably 1974) Quote
fellowtraveller Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Bjork. Why oh why did somebody have to mention Bjork.....? Bjork, the HUman Cabbage Patch Doll. Bjork, the only musician whose name is an exact reproduction of the sound of a cat vomiting. Bjork, who starred in the absolute worst movie ever made - Dancer in the Dark - and yes folks it was a musical. I don't mind the $10 I paid, but I will forever resent the two hours of my life that was irrevocably lost on that pile of steaming dung. I did learn something useful- never, ever attend anything made by the execrable Danish poseur director Lars Von Trier. End of rant. Quote The government should do something.

fellowtraveller Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 Really? I didn't know that. I didn't know two parts of that: that she pranced in a catsuit or that she is a musician. I only believe one of them. I once wound up in a place where basically it was me, a TV set and a DVD of "Breaking the Waves". If that ever happens again, and you also see a sign that says 'Welcome to Regina', you will know for certain that you have died and have been condemned for eternity to Hell.
