Wilber Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 True. However, the way the Tories are spending looks to make it possible that we might see the first annual deficit in many a year. The Liberals ran monthly deficits quite a few times in years where they ended up in surplus. Wait for the year end. Impossible in a political forum I know. HisSelf Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 True, but then the Liberals were not spending at the rate the Tories are now. This is the thing. Conservatives go for the really big ticket items. War. Tax cuts. In that order. Two very expensive items. The Tories promised a tax cut to get into office and now the economy is biting them in the testoosie. Too bad, boys. You lose. A country with a debt is a country enslaved. Our biggest single goal must be to shed ourselves of debt. As long as we are in debt, our souls are on the block. Don't believe me? Look at Bell. Look at Inco. You think we're any different? We sell our bonds into the same markets that these guys sold their stock and we both do it for one reason: to finance operations. You love our air? You love our water? You love our open spaces? You just wait. This is the new world order, no matter what you might hear from the idiots inside the Beltway. And look who has all the money. Quote ...
myata Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 It's interesting also to point out this paradox: many a conservative government, those that were supposed to be prudent fiscal managers, etc, raked high and record high deficits (Mulroney; Reagan; Bush; Harris in Ontario; will have to wait till end of year for this government's record); whilst it was left up to their left (or at least, "lefter" so to say) opponents to clean up the mess they've created. This particularly applies to Bush/Harper style neo-conservative governments that push for costly ideology driven policies (war; punitive only crime policies), and less social involvment (less social programs, lower taxes) all at the same time. Whatever result these strategies may produce, in most likelihood, it won't be the clean balance sheet. More likely, the climate of fear and paranoia, in which environment only they're likely to survive. Quote If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant

Impossible in a political forum I know. I think we can get a pretty good idea on monthly expenditures of a government that has a spending problem. While the Liberals ran monthly deficits, they were cutting back on spending in a big way. Quote

jdobbin Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 (edited) The Liberals ran monthly deficits quite a few times in years where they ended up in surplus. Wait for the year end. Impossible in a political forum I know. And let the Tories continue to spend at the rate they are now. I hear you. I'd prefer some restraint and a tax cut instead.
