World Bank confirms that America wastes more food items than other nations. Besides America consumes the highest quantity of non-vegetarian food.

All food is vegetarian....some though is just one teir removed. After all, would you prefer to eat grass or the animal hat eats grass?

Agreed...the World Bank should see how much "food" America wastes just from mowing millions of lawns.

PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals

Economics trumps Virtue.

PETA is perhaps the biggest group of hypocrites to ever come down the turnpike, and I rather suspect if most of its supporters knew just what the group has actually been doing they would run away in the opposite direction.

Lets look at some of the things PETA stands for and has done:

- They want an end to the use of animals in medical treatment. Yet many PETA members benefit from such treatments developed in the past. Remember Pamela Anderson? She's one of the big spokespeople for PETA. She also has Hepatitis C, which is often treated with Interferon, a drug developed using things like rabbits and chicken eggs during research. (And any famous person who supports both PETA and AIDS research is in serious conflict of interest.)

- They complained when someone created PETA-named website dedicated to things like hunting (called People for Eating Tasty Animals), yet had no problem creating their own websites using the KFC name

- Approximately 2/3rds of the animals left with PETA were euthanized.

- PETA also has given money to certain radicals who have been convicted of blowing up (as in terrorism) science labs used in animal testing

PETA is an example of a good cause going to extremes, and I don't think anything extreme is a good thing. In the case of PETA, I sometimes fear that they are doing more harm than good, and that's too bad, because some of their causes are just causes.

You didn't say why PETA suggested that Bush become a vegitarian. It has to do with the environment: ....raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars, trucks, ships, and planes in the world combined. ...the meat industry is "one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global."

PETA points out that what people eat is more important than anything else they do—such as what kind of car they drive or what type of light bulb they use—in determining their contribution to global warming.

PETA tabled a survey report to prove that for getting one pound of healthy meat, an animal needs to take in crops amounting to 16 pounds. The crop for feeding such animals worldwide comes to 76 crore tonnes a year. A larger portion of the crop can be saved for human population if most of the world population becomes vegetarian. As America is the highest consumer of non-vegetarian food items, they should show the way and Bush, being the president of the country should lead the move.

However, feedback from White House is still pending.

Sure thing, you should lead by example.

I'll watch your example with disinterest while I chow down on a nice slab of beef.

Being an omnivoure thats a pretty natural thing for me to do.

Most humans don't eat grass, or hay. Some eat feed corn though....we call people who eat feed corn, "starving".

PETA also told Al Gore that he couldn't be an environmentalist and still eat meat.

The reason so many go hungry in the world isn't because there isn't enough food produced globally. It's because of poltical and economic instability.

Democracy + free market economy = well-fed prosperous populations.

And I lost all respect for PETA after they started mailing pictures of tortured and abused animals to my younger sister, who was 14 at the time.

Not exactly accurate...

What contributes most to global warming is how many kids you have.

You could be the most eco-minded person on the world, eating only veggies, walking everywhere, and using compact flourecent bulbs, but you will STILL end up causing at least some CO2 emissions. And if you have children, they will also contribute to CO2 emissions. After a couple of generations, the amount of CO2 released by a vegitarian and all of its descendants will swamp the emissions of an SUV-driving carnivourous lumberjack who strangles bunnies as a hobby, but chooses not to have any children.
