August1991 Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 (edited) In ordinary life, we all face bullies: people who play tough to gain an advantage. Sometimes I think that modern Leftism has been reduced to a defence of the oppressed. In effect, the modern (North American) Left wants to defend people against bullies. Really? Well, who are the bullies? As the CHRC boasts in its 2007 annual report, the conviction of every single defendant to come before the tribunal is "sending a powerful message of social solidarity," which is a nice fluffily collectivist way of expressing the system's contempt for individual liberty. LinkThat quote/link comes from a column by Mark Steyn (one of his bests) and it encapsulates the idea of a bully. You lose before you win. Resistance is futile. ---- Left or Right, to be a bully, one must cultivate the reputation for being tough. People should fear you. With such a reputation, before any skirmish starts, the others fold and you get your way. Of course, there's the "minor" problem of what happens when you confront another bully - determined as you to establish a reputation for being tough. It would be nice to live in a world without bullies. Then, we could all get along in peace. The problem, of course, is that one nice person might become a monopolistic bully - a dictator! IOW, how can nice people deal with bully/Mugabe/dictators? Do we have to have other bullies in our midst to keep the potential billies in check? Sometimes I think that life amounts to non-bullies watching the drama of bullies fighting it out. In this drama, I would prefer to side with the bully who is likely to win. Does the Rule of Law make us civilized and control bullies? Common sense says otherwise. Leftists use the power of the State, Human Rights Commissions and so-called "Rule of Law" to bully an ordinary person. Harper's government seems to have drawn the same conclusion. What is the Rule of Law? Here's an idea. Bullies have an advantage in a coercive relationship. When you have no other choice, the worst thing to face is a bully. OTOH, bullies are losers when you have a choice. If you can go elsewhere, who chooses to deal with a bully? IOW, I would expect to see more bullies employed by governments and fewer bullies working for corporations. Government bureaucrats, unionists, schoolteachers, Conservative politicians from Alberta, Liberal MPs from Toronto, parents, husbands, wives, children tend to be bullies. Corporation employees, shareholders, politicians in most elections, friends, acquaintances, dates, store clerks, fiances tend not to be bullies. What is the Rule of Law? I think it is a rule that means we have fewer coercive relations. IOW, the rule of law means that it is clear what I own and it is clear how I can trade it freely with someone else. And so, what is a bully? Edited April 5, 2008 by August1991 Quote
Borg Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 Convictions? Actually I am beginning to think it is - ever so slowly - opening up the eyes of the sheeple of canucklehead land. Sometime soon - the pendulum will swing the other way. Those who use the "system" to promote their agenda will not likely appreciate the push back from Joe tax payer. To answer your final question - it is in fact the left wing combined with our objective media. Despicable groups as a whole. Borg Quote

Leftist Socialism encourages bullies - free market neo-liberalism discourages bullies. Leftists want to centralize decisions to "standardize" and achieve equality. In leftist English Canada, this means "building a country". In fact, this means eliminating choice. Bullies remove choice. Bullies make it plain that you do as they say. The countries of America are the world of the free, and the dove. (In the past two or three centuries, which continent has killed more in war: America or Europe. Which continent is Venus, and which is Mars?) America gives us choice. America is not a country of bullies. Edited April 12, 2008 by August1991 Quote
charter.rights Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 America gives us choice. America is not a country of bullies. Wrong. Liberties can be removed when the government bullies say so. You have limited choices. That isn't the same thing as freedom. eyeball Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 And so, what is a bully? An authoritarian almost always a fearful one. These exist on both sides of the left/right spectrum. Quote I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical criminal
