Why just today he pantsed some brainiac who challenged Nazi socialism. Its either him of kengs since apparently nothing happened prior to 6000 years or so ago. Quote
BubberMiley Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 (edited) I don't have much to say about Pierre Berton myself, although I liked reading the Great Depression and I appreciate a nice bowtie. So all I can do is search through ancient posts and stir up the discussion with things other posters have said about him. There isn't much. But this one is good. I do know Berton was a balless wonder who exemplifies all that went wrong with this country; a self-righteous blowhard who was a legend in his own mind. I had no idea he was missing his testicles. kengs333 Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 Its either him of kengs since apparently nothing happened prior to 6000 years or so ago. First off, learn how to write. Second, I don't think I've ever discussed my understand of what the Bible has to say about Creation, so how you can falsely claim that I somehow believe that Earth was created 6000 years ago is beyond me. Needless to say, you have graced this forum with yet another idiotic post. Well, if it gives you a purpose in life and makes your mommy proud, by all means keep 'em coming... Quote
kengs333 Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 Do we have a better historian? Please post here. Certainly there are better historians. Berton's books are good reads, but the ones I've read contain unacceptable factual errors. Quote

margrace Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 Yes I have read most of his books and I would really like to know specifically what he wrote that was not right? Quote

Army Guy Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 Sure we do, but that would depend on what portion of history you perfer. Burton is a good historian, but then again i like Granatstien, Morton, or Bercuson. Quote We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

Excellent point. Berton is one of those nationalistic cheerleaders that are much more common south of the border. He writes as if 'Canada' was some entity pre-ordained by some god. His non-political writing is good but as soon as he strays into anything touching 'Canada' he's quite juvenile and blinded by his 'belief' inthe destiny of Canada. Quote
margrace Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 So what beliefs did he have that you disagree with? Quote

The latter are historians, Berton is foremost a story teller akin to some of Farley Mowat's works. Berton was a reporter and media personality who's stories fall into the category: 'dog bits man isn't a headline but man bites dog will grab the public's attention'. Quote

Berton was a reporter and media personality who's stories fall into the category: 'dog bits man isn't a headline but man bites dog will grab the public's attention'. Well, not everyone considers him a story teller, and unfortunately in some cases I've seen his "stories" revered as the gospel truth. I'll admit that his books are generally a good read, but of the books that I've read I've been inclined to think that they could have been better researched. He clearly had an agenda, and as is always the case, avoided the full truth when it got in the way. This being the case, and since his books have been widely read, this means that his story telling has been responsible for disseminating a somewhat skewed interpretation of Canadian history. Quote
Who's Doing What? Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 Don't know where he fits in as a Historian but I was quite impressed when I watched him roll a joint to smoke with his tea. Quote Harper differed with his party on some key policy issues; in 1995, for example, he was one of only two Reform MPs to vote in favour of federal legislation requiring owners to register their guns. http://www.mapleleafweb.com/election/bio/harper.html "You've got to remember that west of Winnipeg the ridings the Liberals hold are dominated by people who are either recent Asian immigrants or recent migrants from eastern Canada: people who live in ghettoes and who are not integrated into western Canadian society."
