So, they will reach an age, and poof...shipped off. Ok.

So you are pissed if they stay and pissed if they go. Can you make up your mind?

When they are shipped off to be reminded of what their cultural value set should be by their new families, and then return to Canada to breed, then yes, I'm pissed off. How is that adapting to Canada or blending in or acclimating?

Those girls, raised in Canada, are standing up more often and saying no. Recently one of my students (a Sikh in her early 20s) told her parents that if they didn't want her to have Canadian values, they should have raised her in the Punjab. She is marrying the man she chose, rather than the man her parents chose; he is Sikh, she isn't abandoning her culture and faith, but she is finding a way to make it work in a Canadian context.

Let's hope they don't murder her, like the last girl I heard of who took that position.

Those who murdered here are still respected members of the Sikh community.

Argus,

in the past you have said that your problem is with culture, not race. What do you suggest then, something like immigrants having to take pledges to adopt Canadian values like in Quebec? What about the non whites who choose to adopt the Canadian culture over their homelands culture - do you have a problem with them??

The problem is that when you bring over so many immigrants, from such a vastly different cultural milleau, so quickly, they don't always adapt, for they have no need to. You can come over here from the Punjab, live among tens of thousands of your countrymen, watch satellite TV from India, read Indian newspapers and magazines, go to see Indian movies, go to Punjabi restaurants and community centres, send your kids to special schools, and then ship them home when they reach marriageable age to get a mate before returning.

The problem is the sheer number of immigrants we are taking in. There is no economic or demographic argument which stands up to even the slightest investigation which supports the need for this many immigrants. We ought to cut down radically on the number of immigrants, and target other nations than those who have been pouring immigrants to Canada over the last two decades. Without the steady influx of members of those ethnic communities they will begin to adapt and blend in to the Canadian mainstream, and lose their attachments to their homelands.

It can be dangerous, I agree. Women who defy their families have been locked up, shipped away, beaten, married against their will, and killed. It takes a lot of courage to make this stand, knowing that they may be in danger but willing to risk it. It shows how assimilated the second and third generation of immigrants are; they are Canadian, and expect Canadian laws and values to apply just as much to them as to any white person.

And if these communities did not have a steady, continual, heavy influx of people from "the old country" constantly reinforcing those old values it would be a hell of a lot easier for people like this to make such decisions and make them stick.

Well as long as we are in the realm of fantasy....when they go back, with their law degrees and medical degrees, they will take with them the indomitable spirit of the west and reform the legal and fashion worlds of those muslim, hindu and secular nations....

Are you really that divorced from reality? You should look around the internet a bit and see how young women raised in Canada are sent back to their "homelands", often without knowing they are to be married off to some guy. Then they stay there for a year or so being properly indoctrinated (beaten) into the proper role of women, before sponsoring their "husband" to return to Canada and raise proper little Muslim kids.

Will one of you suggest what we should do for once besides cry about it?
Try cutting cradle-to-grave social welfare perhaps. In my country, immigrants are harder workers than the native-born. I don't get the impression that things are that way in Canada.

Yes, lets hope they don't. She is bright, articulate, respectful, and gentle. She is also willing to use those qualities to stand up for Canadian values, which seems to be a problem for people who really want to say that second and third generation immigrants refuse to adapt. I would expect more support for her position from those who complain about immigrants clinging to their traditional ways.

Canadian Culcher:

Welfare -- for life -- unless you are aborted then you get none!

Igloos -- we have all lived in one at some point, admit it, don't be ashamed!

Two year waits for heart attack victims -- why even bother going to the doctor -- you will never get in anyway!

Watered down prescriptions -- lousy knock-offs off the "good" American drugs!

Marijuana -- everybody smokes it -- including kindergarten kids -- it's the law man!

Gays -- boys must experiment with one another before they are allowed to commit to any one sexuality! Girls get to do it with anyone anytime as long as they look hot doing it.

Taxes -- Canadians take home 2% of what they earn -- and they are happy with that!
